3 out of 5 stars Quite disappointing...   July 20, 2008

i read a lot of reviews about this shaver(mainly from amazon :)) and decided to buy it and as my review title says i was disappointed. It does shave my face very well, but the neck is a no go. In one review i read that it leaves some hair on the neck no matter how hard you try to get rid of them. Well in the end i managed to shave all of them but it took half an hour and left my neck red.

4 out of 5 stars Don't throw out the razor yet   April 12, 2008

I got this shaver as a replacement for the daily grind of smearing shaving cream in the morning, using a Gillette Mach3 or Fusion and often ending up with redness and occasional cuts. I have been using this for many months now and here's what I've found.

Positive -

1. The RQ 1095 shaver is indeed a very good product and the shave is at par with the best that Gillette has to offer, minus the cuts or redness. The shaver glides very easily over the face and is capable of the closest possible shave.
2. The cleaning kit and solution are very good and the shaver feels like new each time I clean it (usually once every 2 weeks).
3. The battery indicator is very accurate and a great feature to have.
4. The portable charger is also very handy for short trips.

Negative -

1. The trimmer is pretty poor and I often end up using the Mach3 to catch any hairs that the trimmer ought to have snapped up.
2. The cleaning kit does take a fair while to clean the shaver and after the cleaning it automatically starts charging the shaver. I don't particularly like this as it means you can't just leave the shaver plugged in while it's cleaning. Overcharging the battery could ruin it.
3. The shaver has not reduced the total time I spend each morning. Despite that I can't think of going back to a razor full time.
4. The Jet clean solution only lasts for 2 applications and thus requires a change every month.

Some tips -

1. The instructions provided in the manual are simple enough and if you have not used a shaver before, be patient with this shaver as it does take time to get used to it. Everyone has different skin sensitivities and it may take your skin longer or less to get used to this.
2. Personally I get a better shave by using a pre-shave conditioning solution. I have tried shave oils but they don't do the trick for me. A conditioning solution along with a splash of water is the way to go to ensure that the skin is never dry while shaving. Dry shaving is over hyped and moisture is the key to a better shave.
3. Use both up/down and circular motions while shaving and do not press the shaver too hard. Instead if you feel that the shaver's missing a spot, simple splash water and then gently go over the area again.
4. After I'm done shaving, I always use an after shave balm to prevent dryness or irritation. I feel that it certainly helps.

Overall this is a good product and I would recommend this over similar shavers. The HS8060 was the other model I was considering but the cleaning kit with this model was the deciding factor. The 8060 shaver does come with a built in shaving lotion dispensing option but the pre-conditioning gel along with an occasional splash of water does the same for me with this one. If not for the poor trimmer, this would be a 5/5 product.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product   March 5, 2008

I started using Phillips shavers about 6 years ago and have had the last 2 top of the range models but this one blows them away by a mile! The blades now face inwards so it glides across your face. I was amazed just how easy and painless it was. The closest shave I have ever had with an electric razor. It's not as close as a wet shave, but its almost as good.

I am delighted I bought this. THE BEST ELECTRIC SHAVER EVER, WITHOUT A DOUBT. Shaving used to be a pain, now its a breeze. Buy it, or keep cutting yourself with razors, it's your choice.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but could still be better   February 28, 2008

Probablt like most people I regard shaving to be a real bind and have always been disappointed at how ineffective a lot of electric shavers are. On that basis I bought this model from Philips and have been pretty impressed. The good points are how easy it is to clean, the smoothness of the shaver heads on your skin(definitely better than other Philips models I have had), the display concerning how much charge is left is useful and overall it does shave well. However, the shave is still not as good as a wet shave, I still do have some areas where the shaver struggles to cut all the bristles requiring repeated attention and the sideburn clipper could do with being a bit wider. Overall I am happy with it as I think it is the best shaver I have had but it is definitely not perfect.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not that good   January 16, 2008

My last shaver was a Philishave Tracer 2-head model, bought 13 years ago. Given that my new shaver was something I expected to use everyday for a similar number of years, I feel it was worth splashing out a bit. I'm not sure what the RQ1095 has that the other Arcitecs don't, but it was the top of the range and also on offer for around 156 pounds so I went for it.

- The feel of the shave is very good. It is extremely smoothe over the skin and the "Flex & Pivot Action" of the independent heads means it's also smoothe over the neck and jaw line. I would consider this the primary benefit of this shaver.

- The unit looks very good and being able to clean it under the tap is helpful, although I think a quick blow and the brush would do a similar job.

- The carbon fibre body is a nice touch, although I don't know if it's really needed (is it to save weight?) - only the sides of the handle are carbon fibre, the rest is rubber and plastic.

- Philips claim that the pivoting heads help get rid of those troublesome hairs on the neck. They definitely go a long way towards this but they're not perfect. The first time I used the shaver I had 4 days of growth (maybe a slightly harsh test) and one or two neck hairs were missed.

- The triple-track heads help to make the shave faster as the cutting area increased. However I haven't noticed a huge increase over my last shaver. Also, the closeness of the shave is good, but I haven't noticed the incredible improvement that other reviews have mentioned.

- The power (transport) pod is great. I have to get a plane to work each week and I can just plonk the shaver in its pod into my rucksack and use it for the week, then recharge it at home over the weekend.

- The cleaning unit looks snazzy but I haven't used it yet. The pot of cleaning fluid that came with the shaver is only good for 15 cleans apparently, and as I live in Brazil I won't be able to buy any more.

- Finally a definite negative: the beard trimmer is no good on my sideburns. It's actually significantly worse than on my old shaver and I end up using a blade to level them off.

To wrap up, it's a good shaver, good looking and efficient. I'm happy with my investment because it will last for a long time and it's nice to have a top of range gadget. However, I don't know what there is in it that justifies the 250 price tag (note: 10x more than many other shavers!). I wouldn't spend that much money on it.
