5 out of 5 stars Very good product   August 7, 2008

If you are looking for a reliable external hard drive to back up your files then this does the job perfectly. Yes you need to format the Hard drive from FAT32 to NTFS but this is really very simple (right click on the drive icon and select format). If you are trying to access it accross a network im not to sure about that but if its just for backing up your home files then this is ideal.
I have had mine for almost two years and it has proved to be 100% reliable, quiet and has fast read write speeds across the USB2 connection.

5 out of 5 stars Great drive - simple and well made   June 22, 2008

I couldn't find any other network attached drive for a similar price. I was looking for something to back my PC up to and have hidden this away in a cupboard attached to a Zytel 'home plug' unit to provide the network. The unit is nicely made and quiet and comes with everything you need including network and USB leads.

The bundled backup software seems pretty good and can be set to backup files as soon as they've been created/changed. It can also save multiple revisions of files. Since the file backup is just a copy of the files it's simple to retrieve them and you can of course just plug the drive into any computer with the USB lead.

I didn't have any problem setting it up on the network, it obtained an IP address that the bundled software then finds. Web interface allows changes of IP address and setting up of shares. There's not any security on the shares, which is a shame, but not really an issue for my purposes. It can also act as an FTP server (where you can configure users), but I haven't tried this.

Overall, very happy with it.

Beware of buying this if you don't know much about compuet networks. I set my hard drive up to wrok off my wireless router and for a month this worked fine. But the minute it started to go wrong I was left to my own devices my a disinterested and unhelpful freecom customer support. I have ended up paying for a compuetr expert to come to my home to set up the whole system. If things like 'IP addresses' mean little to you avoid this product

3 out of 5 stars Good kit if you know what you need   March 14, 2008

We purchased one of these to install on a large campus network as part of a little project we were doing. Installation instructions show you some pictures of a happy user simply plugging it in and it picking up an address, but the difference between the instructions and reality widens to a cosmic abyss at this point. It took us about 40 minutes of head scratching and experiment to get it working, and that was two MCSE's and one CCNA trained guy, sadly. There's no way you could just plug & play with this device on a network unless you know you stuff. Here's what we found...

The drive does not pick up a DHCP address as you would think if you glanced at the manual, it actually IS a DHCP server and hands out microsoft default addresses the moment you plug it in, which will conflict with any DHCP you may currently have (via your ADSL router, for example). The only way we could eventually get into the device was to plug directly into the ethernet port using a cross-over cable (not supplied), and then turn off the DHCP and give it a static address. USB on ours did zilch. When set up correctly on the network and configured, you then install the software on any PC and it works as advertised.

Once configured it seems like a great bit of kit though, files transfer quite quickly and the share was very easy to set up. Loses two stars for wasting all our time with instructions that are a blatant work of fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent product and very easy to set up   February 12, 2008

First of all the downsides, as noted in another review it's formatted FAT32 (because Microsoft would want a fee for using NTFS, presumably) and won't work over your LAN if you reformat it to NTFS - which rather defeats the purpose of getting a LAN enabled drive. Second bad thing is that it's 100Mbs maximum transfer speed. Why isn't everything gigabit yet?

All that aside I have it sitting across the building performing a realtime mirroring of the accounting files on our server, while we get our tape drive sorted out. It's compact, doesn't run hot (contrary to what I saw in another review), is more or less silent and just gets on with it.

I'm so impressed I'm going to spend some of my OWN money and get one of these for my home network.
