5 out of 5 stars Compact - Fast - Quiet   July 31, 2008

This is a fantastic external hard drive to use with Windows. It came formatted as NTFS so I had no problems setting up.

It is quite small and quiet however it does get hot after extended use.

I have had it for a week now and no problems so far however external hard drives have a habit of malfunctioning after some time.

As long as there are no future problems I would recommend this product to all Windows users - I don't own a Mac so I can't test it on one. Excellent value for money and fast delivery.

5 out of 5 stars 1tb hard drive   July 25, 2008

this is a nice product. I agree the hardest part is getting it out of the packaging. Although I do have some issues with it. I have a mac and it works and I phoned apple to ask how to format it to run to its optimum capacity on a mac and they said to format it to "Mac OS Extended (journaled)". IGNORE WHAT THE LEAFLET SAYS IT IS INCORRECT!!!!!!! Now this is all fine its just that I have had my drive for over 28 hours and i started formatting it almost as soon as i got it. now thats quite along time for it to format. But i guess its a big drive.

my other little gripe is if it as been formatting for along time try as best you can not to touch for it gets very hot. It is small and not bad looking.

Im not sure yet if im ever going to use the 1TB but with an auto back up prgram on my mac i guess it'll go alot faster than expected. I did compare ths drve to other smaller ones (with the same rpm (7500)) and if you take the price and divide it by the size you can get a rough idea of how much you are paying. It was something like 10 for a gb now that sound allot but its really not. the other 1TB hard drives have an ave. price of around 110.

so to conclude im not sure if i really really like it yet, but no matter what i like it

5 out of 5 stars So easy to set up and use   July 17, 2008

The hardest part about setting this storage device up was getting it out of the (tight fitting) polythene bag. Other than that, my four-year-old Dell recognised and installed the device in seconds and was transferring data at a rate of 1GB/minute immediately. Initial impressions are that it does exactly what it says it does and does it quickly and quietly. I'd recommend it to any Microsoft user thinking of buying such a size of disk drive.

The only slight surprise to me was size - from the picture on Amazon, I was expecting something a little bigger and this is very compact.

One possible caution for Mac users is that the storage format is NTFS. This is ideal for Microsoft but Mac users are told to reformat to FAT32. The very brief paper instructions don't say how to do this and whilst the information is doubtless somewhere on one of the two Philips URLs given for further information, it wasn't clearly visible on a short visit.

Having read the customer reviews of other storage devices on Amazon yesterday, I very nearly chose one of the smaller storage volume devices that get a full five stars. Somehow my awe at owning a 1TB storage device coupled with the attractive price and the fact that Philips has quite a reputation to lose convinced me to go for it.

Those same reviews of other devices also talk of premature failure of some devices so I'll be glad when the next month is past and will be careful to duplicate storage elewhere of anything import.

To summarise therefore, initial impressions are great and it seems good value for money. Let's see how the reliability stats work out.
