I recently lost my beloved first generation iPod nano at security in a Spanish airport so I decided it was time to treat myself to the present (third) generation and once again I have been blown away.
This model holds twice the music my old one did, and is capable of supporting video, photo and podcasts. The nano also benefits from a larger screen and more battery life, in order to enjoy your digital media to the full.
If you're familiar with Apple and their iPods then this is an excellent addition to their tree.

Really good. Plenty of memory for music with enough for some videos/pictures. Worth buying and is really portable. Easy to use and download onto so worth the money.

Am very impressed with my new nano. Sound quality & volume is, I think, better than the new classic. Its small size may shock the first time you see it but the screen is bigger than the old one and reasonable for music videos. Good text size, flow features and colours. 8G is more than enough memory for me.
Only cons are the usual ones about iTunes, especially no or limited album art support for ripped tracks which was never a problem for microsoft and no support for protected wmas from other providers even tho you have a current license. If a PC user and switching to iTunes from another provider, read the bit in Help about managing your music BEFORE you set up iTunes and your iPod. Pay attention during set-up: Choosing to manage your music yourself is the way to go. Oh, and the nice shiny new metal back marks easily, so a skin is a good idea if you shove it in pocket/handbag with all your other stuff.
Amazon has the cheapest price.

My previous player was a 2 gig Zen V which I bought because it allowed me to convert all my old jazz tapes and vinyl discs etc to digital files on the PC hard drive along with my CD's. It's the only player that lets you do this, and I liked it a lot. Having run out of memory I decided to go for an 8 gig player and chose the new nano because of its slim case and larger screen.
First impressions were very favourable as it is very slim and seems well made. Although the quick start guide is very skimpy and basic, I soon had itunes downloaded and the musical contents of my hard drive into the player. Watch out though, as Apple try to get you spending money in their shop straight away and start to hustle you for a credit card number, saying you cannot be properly registered without it.
Getting photos - I have more than 100 selected ones - onto the player was slightly more difficult but installing my movie clips from Digicam files became a major problem. Unhelpful error messages said this nano could not play them. After printing out the 72 page handbook and spending hours in 'Help', I fixed the problem by using the 'advanced' itunes settings.
Music sounds very good indeed on the little earplugs, having clarity and depth. My zen sounded similar by engaging the 'classical music' equaliser.
The screen is bright and clear but don't get carried away. It has only gone from being tiny to being small and although just about OK for viewing 30 sec movie clips, it is not practical to use for full length videos etc, without prodigous eye strain.
Photos were a big disaapointment as Apple have not included a zoom function. This is really crazy as it badly needs it. Pocket digicams always have it for viewing photos as does the Zen, making a great feature of it.
The cover flow function is a nice idea but I could only get 7 covers to download from itunes, out of 200 albums, making the function quite useless. It simply would not allow the transfer of the album covers from Windows media player into the itunes library. It became quite clear that the detailed instructions I followed for many hours of trying , applied to Mac computers only. By contrast, the Zen showed all the album covers with no problem. Apple say that you will get 100% Album cover support if you buy them from the itunes store!!!.
Ratings. Because of the above software difficulties , lack of a photo zoom function and no album cover support for PC users, I can only give it 3 stars which is a shame. I would like a player of the same physical size sponsored by Microsoft instead of Apple, then I could be sure of better support using my PC.

I bought this player a few weeks ago as an upgrade from a 1GB Sony MP3 player, and I'm generally satisfied.
Good Points:
-The player is fantastically slim (I keep mine in my top shirt pocket!).
-It has an excellent capacity for a unit of its size, being able to hold about 1/3 of my music collection, plus a handful of music videos and podcasts. I guess some people might want ALL their music in their pocket, but I'm not one of them, this is enough for me.
-The screen, though quite small (not a flaw, as this is clearly going to be the case in a player of these dimensions), is fantastic. The colour and definition are superb, and there is no noticable blur.
Bad points:
-The sound quality really isn't that impressive, particularly at the bottom end. I initially used my Sony MDR-EX71SL in-ear headphones, which gave pretty good sound on my previous player and on my Walkman phone. On the ipod nano the volume was appalling (this can be increased a bit on the unit, and then some more on itunes), and the bass was feeble. When I used the bass-boost EQ, all I got was distortion on the bass. I have since upgraded to a pair of Sennheiser CX400s (known for their relatively meaty bass playback), and this has certainly helped a lot, but the bass boost EQ is till a waste of time (why even offer an EQ setting which only distorts the sound?!).
-The battery life is rubbish. I was used to charging my Sony player about once a week whereas this needs charging almost every day, which would be irritating if I forgot once and it conked out the following day. I can cope with this for now, but apparently the type of battery used in ipods gets worse with age. That maybe wouldn't be a problem if it was amazing to start with but it isn't, it's fairly bad new and it's only going to get worse.

In summary: this is a great, compact player, but the battery life lets it down, and you really need to spend about half the cost of the player again on a decent pair of headphones. And if you're into dance, hip-hop, hard rock, R&B, or anything else which has a heavy bassline and tends to be played loud, then definitely look elsewhere.
A note to Apple: please look into decent Batteries and EQ settings! Companies like Sony and Panasonic mastered bass distortion and battery life about a decade ago, it's time you caught up.
