Great Product - Here's why September 3, 2008 Graham Mccarthy (Cheshire) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
OK, so flash drives have been around long enough now to assess their relative merits. I've come up with eight metrics by which I judge them as follows: Secure Fastening - The device is useless if for any reason it won't stay on a key ring, it must have a metal attachment. I've had several flash drives that have had a cord (snapped) and plastic attachment (broken). The Cruzer Titanium has a secure metal ring and hence I'm confident that it will stay on my key ring. Dust Cover - Unsecured USB dust covers always get lost. Captive dust covers are best, the Cruzer Titanium USB interface retracts fully into the body on the flash drive. This is better than an unsecured dust cover but not perhaps as protective as a captive dust cover. Robust Design - Anything attached to a key ring must be robust, it will take some abuse sat in your pocket/purse with coins, keys etc. rubbing against it. The Cruzer Titanium scored very highly here, the titanium case is very strong; it looks solid and feels well made. Speed - Measuring the speed can be subjective, it can depend upon the PC to which it's attached, the operating system and the speed of the disk that the data is being read from. My XP laptop wrote a 195MB file to the Cruzer in 15 seconds, that's 13MB/sec - which is pretty good. It also read it back from in 8 seconds (24MB/sec). Size - The Cruzer is slim enough to enable other USB devices to be attached to adjacent USB ports, so important if you've only got two USB ports and one is taken up by your mouse. Capacity - Here's a shocker, my 8GB Flash Drive had 8GB of space on it. Remember that data is split into 512byte blocks and each block has an address, which takes up a little room, so you never get the full 8GB available for use. They all work the same however so the Cruzer is no better or worse than any other. Compatibility - The Cruzer works just fine with XP. No new drivers to install, no configuration needed, just plug and play. Cost - Given the points outlined above, the Cruzer represents excellent value for money.
What's everyone griping about? August 25, 2008 Stephen Cooper (Norfolk UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Not everyone, I know, but there are an astonishing number of pedants out there. Not 8GB? Just like that 80GB HDD in your PC isn't 80GB either if you calculate in binary; you might as well blame Microsoft or Apple quite honestly. The packaging for this product clearly defines a gigabyte as one million bytes, and that is the industry norm for data storage. This works really well; it's not my first and I certainly appreciate the U3 software not least for my ability to run Firefox with all my regular bookmarks on just about any PC going. Two gripes with this latest model though. The first is that the USB connector is too tight, I'm just hoping that it will loosen a little with age. That's the important one. The second is the change to the appearance; I liked the matt 'grey' finish to the sides and aren't so keen on the latest polished titanium which looks cheap by comparison. This is still the strongest most sensibly designed dongle out there; the only reason you might wish to pass it by is knowing that the 16GB version will be with us before too long now. I bought mine from Flash Memory who say that they supply from the United Kingdom; however it arrived from quite another company out in the Channel Islands. I wasn't asked to pay duty but suspect that I could have been so beware.
Top bit of kit August 8, 2008 Cheatin' Jockey (Worcestershire) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Lets dispel the myths - this can be used as pure storage and the portable application stuff can be removed by going to the website (link is on the drive). If you do that though, you are missing a trick. The point of these U3 drives is that you can run a web browser, security, media and office software and much more from this drive without actually installing anything on the host PC. So many times in the past I've needed to edit a photo, open an office document or play a video and not been able to do so on the PC's in the place where I am, or even if your work machine is locked down this will let you use programs you wouldn't normally be able to install. Just having a web browser that has your favourites on and doesn't leave your information or history when you finish is very valuable to me. It is also nice to know that my data is secure via the password protection. Don't just limit yourself to the U3 site either, the Portable Apps site has many free programs that are world renown. In terms of the device itself, it is amazingly strong and looks very sexy. It is the third one I've had (the others still work, I just got bigger ones) but the first Ti one. If you want great capacity and something robust this is for you - U3 programs or not; if you are prone to leaving USB drives in machines then you should probably get a cheaper one!
In view of all the pompous reviewers..... August 4, 2008 Mark Hudson (London) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I am moved to make this post by the negative comments from people who have no sense of perspective or fairness about how to properly leave reviews. It is very unhelpful, when trying to evaluate a product, to have to read 1* reviews based on the fact that someone doesn't like the clearly advertised FREE U3 software that has been made available or because the drive is only 7.44GB not 8GB. All hard-drives format to less than their nominal size, it's annoying but not a fault only of SanDisk and certainly not enough reason for a 1* review. The SanDisk Cruzer Titanium is an elegant, strong and excellent value product which has worked faultlessly for me for the last 12 months and on returning to buy another I'm delighted to find that I can now buy an 8GB drive for less that a 2GB drive cost me before.
Fit for purpose July 27, 2008 Lewis Buckle (Somerset, UK) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
For the benefit of those readers looking for a recommend but don't know what U3 is, it's a program which purportedly gives better portability to (some of) your programs and their associated files, and it also includes some basic games and puzzles, etc. If left on the pen-drive, every computer you plug it into then 'synchronises with the drive, so you can transfer your files, play the games, etc. This remains in the computer ready for next time, though you obviously need the pen to make it work... I bought one of these because I do a lot of photography, using top end equipment, and have learned to trust the Sandisk memory cards. Others have failed, my Sandisk Extreme III cards just keep going, so I trust the manufacturer. The U3 software can readily be removed from the pen drive at any time, but the better option if you don't want it, is to say no right at the start... it's not so evident to remove it from your computer once 'synchronised' and when you don't have admin rights (as at work). Most of us are inquisitive though, and therefore will want to have a look. I would suggest you either look it up on the internet or load it on a machine in which you have admin rights, and make your own decision. It's all too much of a gimmick for me, I can transfer all my office files and photographs without it and without problem. The U3 software is gone. Once removed, it is as a normal and very reliable pen drive. Therefore; if you want a big drive, to transfer/back-up multiple files, and would pay a bit extra because you work or require it in a rugged environment, and couldn't care less if it maybe takes a few seconds longer to read or write very large files than implied in the description, then I highly recommend this drive to you. If however you want to fit a single file, which is at, close to, or exceeds 8 Giga-bytes, or maybe in this case a mathematical 'Giga' rather than the PC derived version, do as I do, use a DVD, or find a pen-drive which meets your needs. I still recommend Sandisk for reliability.
