Excellent hard drive, do not use the backup programme. November 8, 2008 A Reader. (Somerset, UK) Brilliant memory book, but, having tried the Memeo backup programme which comes with it for 6 months and encountered horrendous problems, including having it wipe valuable information from my computer several times,I would recommend you do not use it at all. You can send information to the My Book via the icon in My Computer quite easily, and then you are in control!(The My Book is excellent value for money, too).
Far from user friendly November 7, 2008 Will (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The My Book Essential comes with backup applications and is pre-formatted to FAT. This affords maximum compatibility with all versions of Windows and is accessible on the Mac, however if you need to use TimeMachine you'll have to reformat (although I believe there is a work around for NTFS drives and TimeMachine). The drive looks very unobtrusive with two blue lights that alternate when the drive is being accessed, one light is always on even when in standby to report the drive has power connected. Both lights go out when you switch off you PC. Operation is very simple, simply plug and go - that's the theory anyway. The main problem I encountered was that the drive is intelligent and turns itself on and off as the computer starts up and shuts down. However on the first Windows XP computer I connected it to (with an ASUS A8N-SLi motherboard) the drive would continually start up and shut down for no reason. Even when accessing the drive it would shut itself down and the the data transfer would be interrupted. Because there is no power button on the drive or any configuration software to control the drive's operation there's nothing you can do to stop it. The next problem I encountered (when connected to the above machine) was that it would interfere with the system's startup. Despite making the appropriate adjustments in the system BIOS (i.e. to boot from 'C:' and ignore all other USB/network devices) the machine would start to load Windows then restart itself. The only way to prevent this was to unplug the USB lead (because there's no power button) thus negating the intelligent on/off function of the drive. In both of the above cases I looked through Windows hardware settings to make sure that the USB port being used (and I tried a couple of different ports) wasn't going into some sort of power saving mode causing the drive to shut down but to no avail. I've still no idea why it interrupted Windows startup. In the end I gave up and have now had to use this drive on another machine that doesn't have the above problems (it's now connected via a powered USB hub), so just make sure you fully test the drive within seven days in case you need to return it for the above reasons. One final problem I encountered was when trying to format the drive to NTFS. For whatever reason Windows would prevent me from formatting the drive, reporting that a process was still using the drive. I'm not sure what this was as I disabled Google desktop and any other I/O applications. In the end the only way I could format the drive was to go to control panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > disk management and delete the partition on the My Book, then recreate it and then finally format to NTFS. Not exactly user friendly. Now that I've gone through all the above steps and connected the drive to a different Windows XP PC it works as advertised including fully shutting down when the PC is turned off. It's an interesting innovation starting the drive up automatically as the PC boots up, however for maximum compatibility I'd like to see a power button added to the drive so that if you decide to, you can turn the drive on and off manually.
MAC USERS DO NOT BUY!! November 5, 2008 Mr. R. C. Dawson 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
IF YOU USE MAC DO NOT BUY A WESTERN DIGITAL DRIVE. IT WILL NOT PARTITION AND CANNOT BE REFORMATTED FOR MAC. THERE ARE TUTORIALS AVAILABLE TRYING TO SOLVE THIS. THEY DO NOT WORK. WD SUPPORT ARE USELESS. THE DRIVE IS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. AVOID. HOPE THIS WILL SAVE YOU THE WASTED TIME AND FRUSTRATION I HAVE HAD FROM BUY THIS FALSELY ADVERTISED AS MAC COMPATIBLE PRODUCT.
Not even a year... November 4, 2008 Michael Baldock 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Not even had my WD book for a year, and I've lost every document and picture saved on it. After some research, I've found that these books are common for corrupting. No idea how as it's stationary and always connected to my computer.
