1 out of 5 stars SYNC SOFTWARE DOES NOT BACKUP   October 28, 2008
Mr. P. A. Drew
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

I'll put my hands up straight away and admit I'm no techie. I bought my WD Passport for use as a backup to my PC's internal hard drive. Foolishly, I assumed that the Sync software bundled with it would do this. *** IT DOES NOT ***. In fact, once your files are encrypted it is a nightmare to extract them later. Should you need to format your internal hard drive on your home PC you are pretty much stuffed if you used Sync. WD customer service is not existent - they refer you to DMailer the company that wrote the Sync software.

I'd recommend deleting the Sync software and using the device purely as a hard drive. I can't tell you how much I wish I had done that! It is not clear when you first install Sync that it is not backup software! WD should put a large sticker on the Passport informing customers of this.

I will not be buying any more Western Digital products after this experience.

5 out of 5 stars Best external I've ever had, it has a very efficient size and transfer rate however the encryption software wasn't too helpful.   October 24, 2008

Best external I've ever had, it has a very efficient size and transfer rate however the encryption software on it wasn't too helpful but overall a very robust piece of hardware.

1 out of 5 stars The start was bad it trailed off in the middle and the less said about the end the better...   October 23, 2008

I already own a My Book which is sluggish and starting to act up so I thought I'd give WD another go and have a look at their more portable device.
The packaging firstly was incredibly difficult to open and after having hacked it to pieces I finally managed to plug the device into my computer. It then tried to start up, failed (making a grating and clicking noise) and tried again. It looped until I'd had enough and unplugged it.
The usual returns process with Amazon then followed, which, to their credit, was swift and easy and they ordered a replacement. Which did exactly the same thing with the same amount of package hacking. Amazon have more recently sent an email explaining how the present product has a fault and that they would refund me in full instead of a third replacement. So I've ordered a LaCie drive instead. Let's hope it's better...

4 out of 5 stars Handy device   October 21, 2008

I got this passport drive about a month ago and I am almost using this regularly. Its very useful and handy. Rarely this drive is getting lost from the system drives list, after refreshing the system it came back again. Though the transfer speed is bit slow, still its worth having it.

That's about all I have to say - I love it!

I've bought a couple for work - makes it very easy for me to carry stuff back and forward, and having just one cable makes it even more useful.
