All I wanted was a cheap, easy to use backup for the files on my 2 hard drives in the PC. This does just that. Didn't need to reformat it, I use it as FAT32 just like my existing drives. Use Windows explorer to move stuff onto it. Or just use it as a hard drive from any application. It's that simple. No drivers needed, no install procedure, and it's small and light, and yes, very quiet! (If you put your ear next to it while it's being accessed, you can hear faint noises.) As it says, there's no fan, but there are cooling holes on the back and underneath. The back panel, like the front one, has a clear plastic protector on it for transport, so remove these before use, or the rear holes are blocked. It wasn't an issue, but in prolonged use, maybe it could be.
Within an hour of opening it, I'd got it about 1/3rd full! So, why buy a small capacity HDD? Well, why backup all your stuff onto a big one, say 500GB, only to have it maybe fail in the future? 2 or 3 small ones ensure you won't lose everything!

I bought this drive for its reviews, but saw no reference to the necessity of a power cable needed for some systems, which is an extra 15 plus from Freecom including postage. Be warned.

Very good piece of equipment, pity it came formatted in FAT32, had to spend some time converting it to NFTS, but that was all, now just drag and drop

Because this uses a smaller 2.5" notebook hard disk, it's small (not much bigger than a pack of playing cards) and can be powered through a USB port so one less plug socket to find. It's particularly good if you want to use it with a laptop while on the go.
At 120GB, it isn't the biggest drive in the world and because it's a 2.5" drive it won't be the fastest but it isn't meant to be.
For 40 you can't really go wrong.

I wanted something small & compact to back up files/music/photos and this has done the trick, although I know there are smaller portable HD. This is so easy to use. I plugged the USB cable into my Dell and Vista recognised it straight away. Transfer speeds seem pretty good too. My only quibble is that the unit only really has 111GB of storage rather than 120GB, but I know that other portable units have the same issue. Otherwise this is perfect - so far - and excellent value for money from Amazon at under 40!
