Travel Insurance Direct vs. Direct Line, a price comparison
Direct Line has always been a major insurance provider, but how does its policy fair against the so far unbeaten Travel Insurance Direct?
You probably now the score by now: we compare two travel insurance policies – price and cover details and attempt to find the best value for money.
The quotes are for 1 adult single trip travel insurance policy to any destination worldwide excluding the USA and Canada for up to 16 days. In this instance, you have to select a country, so for this experiment we have selected the popular destination of Thailand.
First we look at price. The quote from Direct Line comes in at a whopping £46.68 – a big difference as the Travel Insurance Direct policy costs just £29. So do the policy details warrant the higher price tag?
As with the Essential Travel quote, the payout should you require medical attention is once again considerably less than the payout from Travel Insurance Direct. Direct Line offer a payout of £5 million, half of the £10 million offered from Travel Insurance Direct.
The legal expenses payout from Direct Line is higher than that of Travel Insurance Direct, but lower for delayed departure, delayed baggage and missed departure.
Payouts for personal accident with Direct Line range from £10,000 - £25,000 depending on circumstances, whereas the payout for Travel Insurance Direct remains at a consistently high £20,000.
Hospital benefit and mugging cover are not specified in the Direct Line policy.
The following are quotes from Travel Insurance Direct and Direct Line based on 1 adult who is below the age of 65, traveling up to 16 days to a worldwide destination outside of the USA and Canada (Thailand for the Direct Line Quote):
| Direct Line | TID | |
| Medical | £5,000,000 | £10,000,000 |
| Personal Possessions | £1,500 | £1,500 |
| Personal Money | £500 | £500 |
| Cancellation/Curtailment | £5,000 | £3,000 |
| Personal Liability | £2,000,000 | £2,000,000 |
| Delayed Departure | £200 | £800 |
| Legal Expenses | £50,000 | £15,000 |
| Price | £46.68 | £29 |
Price wise, the Travel Insurance Direct quote is nearly £20 cheaper. The policy details from Direct Line do not seem to warrant this higher price tag either. With medical expenses payouts being considerably lower, with marginal gains for legal expenses and cancellation/curtailment.
Overall, the Travel Insurance Direct quote is superior, and at almost £20 cheaper, we feel the quote from Travel Insurance Direct offers better value for money.
