Travel insurance claim, a case study
Many people feel it is not important to take out travel insurance cover when going on holiday. The following cases highlight what can happen if you do not take out a travel insurance policy when travelling abroad:
Phil and Janine Denya:
Phil and Janine Denya from Kent travelled to the Maldives without taking out travel insurance in March of 2007. Mr Denya broke his leg when his jet ski collided with another and had to be taken to hospital for treatment. He required surgery to pin his leg in two places, and because of his lack of travel insurance cover, had to pay a medical bill of over £17,000.
This is one example of how not taking out travel insurance can be very painful should you become injured. The Telegraph published an article on how not insuring yourself when abroad can hurt your wallet, and highlights the prices that can be involved should you need rescue and treatment:
Helicopter rescue in Europe: £2,000
Transit hoe may require taking up four airline seats
Air rescue in the USA costs between £4,000 and £7,000
Broken pelvis in the USA: £25,000
Broken lower leg: USA - £16,000, Europe - £7,000
The above case study of Phil and Janine Denya is in contrast with that of Dr Goss in the Telegraph article who broke her leg whilst cross country skiing.
Her travel insurance policy completely took care of her hospital treatment and her transport home. She was even offered a flight for a member of her family to meet her to bring her home, and all it cost her was a travel insurance policy worth £86, a small price compared to what you may have to pay if you do get injured and are not insured.
