Time to tax carrier bag waste

I endured a shopping trip to one of the UK major supermarkets this past weekend, not my favourite pastime, but it was required. At least there were some disabled parking spaces at the store I visited, unlike Tesco whose disabled parking spaces are extremely poor.

Given that everyone is going ECO mad and that being ECO friendly is even more fashionable than Colleen McLoughlin, why are the supermarkets not doing more at source to help the problem?

Recycle or die Ikea has already taken the stance of charging people for carrier bags, but Supermarkets used to do this years ago. The only reason they stopped this practice was to engage in the turf war. Free carrier bags became a give away to store users.

Tesco have been giving clubcard points for not using new carrier bags and looking at the Clubcard statement this does look accurate, but the cashback I received was simply not enough for MrCrip being an eco warrier! I want more cash rewards for being planet friendly!

All of us should have enough carrier bags in our posssession to be able to claim to be a collecter of Carrier bags, so why do more of us not take their stash of carrier bags when we go food shopping?

If you don’t you take shopping bags, you are a lazy sod, end of. It’s about time that this simplistic way of helping the environment was made to hurt the pocket. I’m thinking that an extra 10% should be added to your food shopping bill if you use the bags on offer when packing your shopping.

The extra cash that is generated could then be invested into eco friendly projects such as wind farms etc.

With the EU placing a 10-15% import tax on plastic bags imported from the Far East, are we actually starting to get to grips that it is the waste generated by us which is the major reason behind global warming.

But Where does that leave manufacturers of carrier bags? Companies such as Anglo Packaging are specialists in carrier bags; but surely if we all start to reuse our carrier bags demand will be diminished and that can only lead to job losses, so there are knock-on effects for everything.

All these questions from one shopping trip, it’s frightening! But then so’s having no food or water, which will come if we carry on consuming the planet the way we are.
