Tesco travel insurance, a price comparison

People always feel safe going with the big guys for travel insurance. Household names such as Tesco are a name you can trust, but are they the cheapest? We have run a price comparison against the jack of all trades Tesco travel insurance, and compared this against a specialist travel insurance provider – Travel Insurance Direct.

Looking at a single trip travel insurance policy, for 1 adult travelling to a worldwide destination, outside of the USA and Canada for up to 16 days, Travel Insurance Direct comes out a fair bit cheaper, with the Tesco quote coming in at £37.99 per person, whilst the quote from Travel Insurance Direct is just £29 per person.

But travel insurance isn’t just about the quote price, it is also largely dependent on the cover that you will receive should you need to make a travel insurance claim.

First off, the Tesco policy will cover medical expenses of up to £2,000,000, whilst the Travel Insurance Direct policy covers up to £10,000,000, a huge difference. Travel Insurance Direct also offers a higher payout on personal possessions, money, cancellation and curtailment and legal expenses. The only higher payout for Tesco is for delayed departure:

Below are quotes from Travel Insurance Direct and Tesco based on 1 adult below the age of 65 travelling for 15 days to a worldwide destination outside of the USA and Canada:

  Tesco TID
Medical £2,000,000 £10,000,000
Personal Possessions £1,250 £1,500
Personal Money £400 £500
Cancellation/Curtailment £2,500 £3,000
Personal Liability £2,000,000 £2,000,000
Delayed Departure £2,500 £800
Legal Expenses £15,000 £15,000

Price £37.99 £29

Travel Insurance Direct also cover pet care costs, hijacking and golf cover.

Looking at not only the price of cover, but the actual cover itself, Travel Insurance Direct is an obvious winner with the level of cover being drastically superior, particularly looking at the medical expense cover.
