Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance Price Comparison
This time we see another jack of all trades giant Sainsburys go up against the travel insurance specialists Travel Insurance Direct.
Again comparing quotes for a single trip travel insurance policy, 1 adult travelling to a worldwide destination outside of the USA and Canada for up to 16 days, Travel Insurance Direct comes out, this time considerably cheaper than Sainsburys. Remembering the price for this policy with Travel Insurance direct was £29, Sainsburys comes out as a whopping £50.29 per person, a staggering £20 more.
Does Sainsburys offer substantially better cover than Travel Insurance Direct to warrant this price tag? Let’s find out…
First of all, the policy with Sainsburys will cover medical expenses of up to £10,000,000 - a great deal more than the Tesco policy does, but not any more than Travel Insurance Direct’s policy offers. The same can be said for personal posessions, money and personal liability - Travel Insurance Direct offers the exact same payout as Sainsburys offer for getting on for half of the price!
The TID policy offers an £800 payout for delayed departures, whereas Sainsburys falls short at just £250. Sainsburys does however offer higher payouts for legal expenses and cancellation.
Below are quotes from Travel Insurance Direct and Sainsburys based on 1 adult who is below the age of 65. Cover is for travelling up to 16 days to a worldwide destination outside of the USA and Canada:
| Sainsbury’s | TID | |
| Medical | £10,000,000 | £10,000,000 |
| Personal Possessions | £1,500 | £1,500 |
| Personal Money | £500 | £500 |
| Cancellation/Curtailment | £5,000 | £3,000 |
| Personal Liability | £2,000,000 | £2,000,000 |
| Delayed Departure | £250 | £800 |
| Legal Expenses | £25,000 | £15,000 |
| Price | £50.29 | £29 |
Travel Insurance Direct also cover pet care costs, hijacking and golf cover, the Sainsburys policy features mugging cover.
The actual cover itself is very similar between both policies, and looking at these alone, the two come out fairly even. The price however, makes Travel Insurance Direct a clear winner. There is nothing in the Sainsburys policy that would make paying the £21.29 extra worth doing. The Travel Insurance Direct policy is more than adequate, and for that reason, Sainsbury’s is the loser on this occasion.
