InsureandGo, child kidnap cover, immoral opportunistic marketing

Following the recent kidnapping of Madeline McCann, the on-line insurance giants, InsureandGo have introduced extra cover for ‘child kidnap’ to their travel insurance policies.

This additional cover will be as standard on their Travel Insurance policies.

The child kidnap cover pays out a maximum of £110,000 of children up to the age of 18. The additional cover includes costs such as accommodation, media activity and translators to help find a child should this event occur.

The question arises is this purely opportunistic marketing from InsureandGo? Whilst I think having the additional cover in place is no bad thing why has taken an event such as the disappearance of Madeline McCann to prompt such cover.

The other aspect is how many children actually do get kidnapped whilst on holiday? Let’s face it, it is a rarity and responsible parents would not leave a child in a venerable position in the first instance.

InsurandGo have rightly used this fear factor as a marketing tool, it will be interesting to see if other online Travel Insurance companies such as Travel Insurance Direct follow suit
