Grannys dead, we can finally cash in!!!

It seems to be these day that as soon as Granny is dead, the kids are rubbing their hands together in anticipation to get them on the valuable antiques & property. Some families will even go for years racking up debt in the knowledge that granny will die soon and leave us her home.

Who knows, if there’s some money left over we could buy a villa in Spain, seems to be the general school thought, while the death of the Grandparents seems to be a career move for the others.

When I was growing up my granny did everything for me, it was difficult going though childhood without a dad. She meant the world to me and when she did eventually die in her very old age, she left all her possessions to me. There were no family squabbles over who got what because I was her only grandson and even though I could cash it all in tomorrow and buy a boat out in Monte Carlo (ok so I’m going overboard, no pun intended), they are in my home, because the financial cost is worth nothing compared with the sentimental cost.

One of the her possessions I did inherit was an antique desk that I used to love drawing pictures on for hours during my childhood and now my children use it to draw on and if one day when I die my children or their children decided to sell it because they want a few quid to go to Disney Land, it would be a very sad day.

I love it on Antiques Roadshow, when people go to get their heirlooms valued and are told that they are worthless, their hearts literally sink in to their stomachs as they try to put a brave face on and contemplate what they are going to tell the bank manager.

Family doesn’t seem to be as important as it once was and to many it is more about how much you can get out. If more people cared about family as they used to then there would be more happiness and the world would be a better place to live.

A lesson to all you money grabbing, granny death wishers, think about some else before you worry about when your inheritance is coming.

Now this, i can agree with…. but i wouldn’t say it’s just these days, unless that was just your short choice of phrase, id say its been happening for a hell of a lot longer then even you can remember.
