Alcopops to Blame for Binge Drinking?

Image: Asda Students.co.uk Many of us have seen it, some of us have been there, staggering down the streets in a drunken haze, bumping into anything and everything and making a complete arse of ourselves. You guessed it, the scene in any big town or city in Britain on any given weekend, and as Dr Bob looked at Britain’s booze culture, I will examine whether it is in fact alcopops we have to blame for the binge drinking culture that we have all come to know and hate.

So, why would alcopops be the reason for this behaviour we have come to associate with the Bevs, Kevs and Trevs of society? It may have something to do with the fact that they are manufactured with screw-tops for easy access in the parks and bus shelters and are flavoured with ridiculously sweet and palatable flavours that will appeal to girls and the younger generation.

Could this ‘diseased culture’ have stemmed from the beautiful coastal town of Torquay? Home of the biggest bottle of tart fuel known to man – WKD.

WKD, or Wicked Original Vodka is a branded alcopop (also known as bitch piss) and part of the ready to drink range of drinks that has caused controversy over the past decade in the UK with it’s relation to youth alcoholism and it’s effects can be seen every Friday and Saturday night as the crowds swagger back to their Torquay hotels, and with no Basil Fawlty to keep them in check, this behaviour continues to be a manace to our society.

Should the alcohol industry be allowed to market strong alcoholic drinks in sweet fruity flavours that encourage under-age and excessive drinking?
It is very obvious that these drinks are targeted towards the younger generation, and with violent incidents such as the case of a drunken gang of teenage youths killing a father of three for confronting them regarding vandalism occurring more and more frequently, we have to ask ourselves whether alcopops should be removed from the shelves for good.

Oh brother!!!….not another thing to blame and ban…I’m sick to death of this blame and scaremongering culture we seem to have these days…. you would think that the last young generation or past young generations never drank or got rowdy and staggered through the streets..though there may be more females doing it now then ever before and if we really want to go down the blame culture lets put

All messing aside I really don’t think you can blame one vartiation of a product for all drunken yobs we see in society….its like saying we shouldn’t sell big cars because there is more deaths on the roads now

Gruntled said “past young generations never drank or got rowdy and staggered through the streets..”. You’re bloody right there. As a member of the generation of teenagers in the 50’s and 60’s we most certainly did NOT get drunk, and cause problems because we didn’t take drugs, drink alcohol, and go around mugging old people. I admit as “teddy boys” we carried flick knives and bicycle chains, but their weren’t as many stabbings and use of handguns as there is now.

I live next door to a “yob culture” pub and between 2am and 3:30am members of this generation of youngsters stagger out, shouting, fighting, peuking up in my front garden, revving their “sporty” cars, vandalising peoples cars and property etc. The biggest trouble makers seem to be under-age, drunk fat girls egged on by their equally scruffy boyfriends!

Gruntled, WKD is marketed to very young men and women with little experience of alcohol, and is designed to have a sugar content high enough to taste like a fizzy drink, and make people want to drink more.

Are big cars marketed specifically to first time drivers with the intent of them crashing it and needing to buy a new one?

While I admire you effort at drawing a comparison, the one you used was vastly inaccurate.

The point of the above article is that these alcopops CAN be traced back to violence due their appeal to teenagers in both the way that they are marketed and due to the fact they are designed to get people drunk quickly. - Is this really teaching people to drink responsibly?

“Are big cars marketed specifically to first time drivers with the intent of them crashing it and needing to buy a new one?”
Have you heard of the term ‘Boy Racers’ I-eat-children???…. there is definitely loads of cars today marketed for this very type of young people and of course they are not doing it in order for these kids to crash the cars no more than the Alcopops Companies are selling and marketing their product in order for kids to become violent and Yobish …they are simply just selling a product… its down to the individual on what they do with it or how they allow it to effect them.
I don’t think the comparison is vastly inaccurate at all…however what is vastly inaccurate is Society’s perceptions of whats right and wrong today…we seem to be constantly dictated to by the media amongst others of what we should consider morally incorrect and this changes like the weather as far as I can see..All of a sudden we apparently have a problem with the young drinking so now we must all attack the bad men who make alcopops….its ridiculous!!! Particularly as it was only reported yesterday on all the news services about a new poll stating that “People in their 30s and 40s are worse than those much younger at sticking to their drinking limits.” Should ‘Budweiser’ makers be promoted to the bad Guys list now aswell??
I just think Alcopops is a scapegoat here, and personally I think the main reason we get lots of drunken Yobs has very little to do with the more expensive Alcopops but more the extremely cheap cans of beer you can buy in any supermarket and you see being drank on the streets by large numbers of teens

You also ask is this teaching responsible drinking? Would removing Alcopops improve responsibility here? Lets also remember too that it isn’t just those under the age of 18 who drink this stuff….many in their twenties do to…..Are we going to teach these twenty year olds responsibility by banning aswell? Many women drink this stuff also…Are we going to tell these females No…that ain’t responsible…get yourself a real Vodka and Orange? lol
Its about time we stopped centreing blame in my opinion and cut out listening to these stats that are released every two minutes

I would have thought the problem here isnt that the teens are getting drunk, its more the fact that they’re vandalising little shits, regardless of whether they’re teens or not. The fact that teen violence is reported more in the media doesn’t mean that its more prevelant. Keith, you said in your comment that not all teenagers in your day went around smashing things up. Well, guess what? Some things never change. The only difference is now they’re not teddy boys, they’re ‘gangstas’. The only thing thats changed is the stereotype people attach to all teenagers. Because we all seem to be forgetting one important fact - yes, there are a few drunken kids who go out and smash up public telephones, but the vast majority of teenagers drink, and - guess what - don’t go out mugging old people. These vandalising kids would do the same thing sober - I can attest to this, because I know a few of them and they’re absolute cunts whether or not they’re drunk, stoned or horny. I am sick and fucking bored of the tired old stereotypes that older people and the media consistantly force upon teenagers - the bad eggs are very much in the minority. Now lay off the rest of us.

I think to say that alcopops cause binge drinking is on the hasty side to say the least, i myself am only 18 so i guess you could say i’m seeing it from a young persons view.

Having had a lot of friends on drugs from class c-to-b, and drink alcahol everyday, aged from 15-32 ish i can safely say, alco pop are the last thing id say for the cause of binge drinking, and also if anything to do with the alco pops was to blame, it would be the amount of sugar and other e number content is possesses, that causes young girls especially in my experience to go stupid, hyper, giggly, and annoying.

i think one of the major factors causing binge drinking is the fact we’re constantly being told not to do something, hence the age old case of “Do not, under any circumstances eat that cake” …. *child eats cake*.

Another reason is because it is glory fide to fuck, and rightly so? why shouldn’t people enjoy drinking? it’s a perfectly acceptable substance to have fun with, when used correctly.

And thats exactly where your answer is aswell, the problem is kids miss use it, and this is caused by to many fucking things to think of, stupid parent generation, either not knowing what their kids are doing, being to dumb fucking stupid to not see the change, miss informing the kids…etc…

And that also leads us to the schools, i know i was never taught the constant use of alcahol would be bad, sure i got told your liver and kidneys would rot..but only over years of pro longed miss use, but hows that a bad thing? we’re young today!!
Lets face it thats not the worse thing alcoholism leads to, how about harder hitting things such as the 8-20 pound of cider you buy a day to fuel yourself? then also comes the memory loss, the out of breathe high blood pleasure heart attacks, and worse in my opinion, the Acute pancreatitus, which kills you in a slow and painful way.

And then theres the kids, well lets face it, this generation, is full of dumb minded fuck wits with no more sense then a garden rock with dog shit stains on it, but personally i don’t think their always the ones to blame, after all i know most of my parents and others there age turned out fine, personally i think it’s down to good education, and a little bit of the old corporal punishment, if half the dads out there would of smacked their chavvy little cunt of a sun, it would certainly teach them some fucking manors and respect. (here come the “but beating is wrong” complaints. fucking morons…

Iv had my rant on this one for now, to defend my view id need to argue all day with everyone, and i simply ain’t got the time, but its a definite no no for me to agree with the title of this topic, let alone the bullshit it consists off.
