5 out of 5 stars Great for classical and opera!   December 1, 2008
P. V. MARSH (Salisbury)
I have experienced many problems recently in finding an mp3 player capable of easily taking multiple CD sets. This Creative Zen makes it the easiest operation ever! So if you want to put your 3 CD sets of various operas onto a device then this is the one. It is excellent in every respect. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Want the latest iPod? Here's how to get it for a fiver   November 30, 2008

Christmas is coming so save your cash! Why purchase something you can get for a fiver.

Go to YourIpod.co.cc and sign up. Complete ONE offer - I would recommend Gala Bingo (you know, the one Sharon Osborne advertises for on tv),as this is cheap and fun (and you might win some money in the process!)

If you really don't want to spend, there is a free Lovefilm trial.

All companies are well known so there is no risk involved- give it a go! I got my iPod and many other things this way, so don't miss out.

I was a sceptic once but now I am SO glad I gave it a chance. B8C approved this system on their Newsnight programme a while back.

Many items to choose from and they send your gift Free of charge.

4 out of 5 stars Good deal   November 28, 2008

I initially bought this item several months ago after reading a large number of views which seemed split between saying it was brilliant and that it broke. I decided it was worth the risk and bought myself one - two weeks later it broke (screen went white and the reset button didn't work) I sent an email to amazon asking for a replacement on Saturday evening - my replacement arrived in the post on monday morning and the faulty product was picked up that afternoon so I have to say that amazon's service was excellent.
I've had this new one for a couple of months now and have waited to write my review to see if any other faults arised - apart from one time when I had to press the reset button, it has worked perfectly.
My past MP3 was a big old chunky creative zen that was incredibly durable (can't remember how many times I dropped the thing) but it finally died after water leaked in my bag and I didn't realise until it was swimming in it. I decided to stick with zen for my next player as I'd been very happy with them in the past.
The player is very lightweight and compact with a reasonable sized screen. Unlike my older zen it is made out of plastic and this coupled with it's weight makes it feel a little more fragile and so I ensure that I take good care of it.
Like has been mentioned the screen gets alot of finger smudges and also scratches relatively easily - I have been taking good care of mine and yet I somehow have got a tiny scratch in the middle of the screen, so some sort of protecting cover is probably a good idea.
The player enables you to customise your background which I feel is a nice personal touch.
The menus are easy to navigate and once you get the hang of it the software is easy to use (tip: you don't need to use anything other than 'zen media explorer' to add things to the MP3).
All in all although it is clear there have been some quality control issues I would still recommend the player - if you get one that works it's great, if you get a faulty one then amazon will gladly replace or refund it so it's pretty much a win win situation.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little MP3 PLayer   November 26, 2008

I have had a 4GB Zen for a few weeks and like it a lot.

I have been and still am, a long time user of Ipods with large hard disks. For me, the Zen is not a replacement for my Ipod, I wanted a smaller cheaper alternative that I could leave in the car, take to the beach or just put in the pocket of my jeans. The Zen is perfect for all these, but to stop at this point would not do justice to the Zen. The Zen is a very good player. The sound quality is excellent (although to be fair I use Sennheiser headphones). Playlists can be created by just dragging files to the Creative's Media Explorer. It's all very easy to use and quite intuitive. I have encoded a couple of movies and even though the screen is small they are a pleasure to watch because the picture quality is so good.

The big attraction for me was that the Zen can use SDHC expansion cards, and 16GB cards are know quite cheap (if you look around). However, the files on the card are not integrated with the files on the Zen and you can only play them by browsing the card. So you cannot use playlists for tracks on the SD card. Playlist are important for me because I listen to audiobooks as well as music. An audiobook can have 100 tracks and you just have to hear them in the correct order). If I had known this in advance I would have brought the 8GB version. On the plus side, tracks downloaded from Audible can be played on the Zen.

I am currently using a 4GB SDHC card; so far I have not found a way of putting tracks on to the SD card while it is in the Zen (and the Zen linked to the PC). So I put the tracks directly on the SD card using a card reader. Years ago I brought a really cheap Chinese MP3 player from Ebay that had an SD slot as well as internal memory. I did'nt need to take the card out to copy the tracks the SD card, it just showed up on Windows Explorer as an external drive. Why does Creative make it more difficult than a no name MP3 player?

It is also a little disappointing that you have to re-encode existing Divx movies before they can be played on the Zen.

If the SD card was better integrated with the Zen I would have given it 5 stars, but as often happens with Creative stuff they have a really great idea, produce a great produced but mess up on the detail.

4 out of 5 stars Decent value for money   November 23, 2008

I have had the 16GB model for over 2 months.

The build quality is fine. I don't know what people expect. I use fingers with this, not hammers. It does pick up smudges but this is really quite a minor point. Designers, please note - the on/off/lock switch is awkwardly close to the headphone socket. The operating system is a little quirky at times but not annoyingly so.
The radio isn't great (finds it harder to pick up a signal than my previous 5-yr old MP3 player) but is OK and works with any headphones I use.
Video is OK as long as you note 2 things. 1 - Due mainly to screen size this is not the best for watching long videos such as entire films. 2 - It is very fussy about what videos it will play. In practice you have to use the supplied conversion software for pretty much everything. This doesn't bother me as it is a straightforward process and I don't watch much video anyway - I got this for MP3 playing.
I don't use the SD slot so have no comment.
It categorises the music by MP3 tags. This annoyed me at first as I have my music in my own folders and it totally ignores them. However, it wasn't a big problem and it made me tidy up the tags on the music I had - a one-off job that now makes things easier all round.
It has frozen on me once. A quick reset and it was fine.

My only major criticism is the battery. 25 hours? You must be kidding. Even with the screen off as much as possible and the volume low, I don't think I could get more than 15/16 hours out of this. Sometimes I'm sure I only get 10 hours. However, in practice I can recharge easily so I am rarely left with a dead player.

All in all, I feel I got what I paid for.
