Not a bad camera, although Sony could have done better! November 24, 2008 Mr. Alex Denney 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Not a bad camera, but I think Sony could have done better... The stills are pretty good, they do have some graininess indoors, even at a fairly low ISO (200) and you have to go down to ISO 100 with flash or really good light if you want noise-free pics. Also, the SL option on the flash gives quite poor pictures indoors with subjects closer to the camera really blurred even with face recognition turned off (whereas my old Cyber-Shot P200 actually gave better indoor stills with this option enabled, good detail, good focus) so you need to use normal or red-eye reduction flash. You can change the flash intensity when using the "P" mode for shooting and also the auto focus options (change to multi rather than spot or center) to get sharper focus on subjects in the frame. Outdoors, ISO 200 is still really the max you want to go to. I found ISO 400 starts to get really noisy and there is loss of colour balance as well. Using ISO 100 or 200 colour reproduction, shadows and highlights are all handled reasonably well with minimal burnouts and the dynamic range thingie is pretty good. The "P" function to set some parameters manually is OK, but I would have really liked some control over the aperture and shutter speed which you can't do on this camera. The 5x optical wide angle zoom is quite nice. I didn't notice much distortion at min/max zoom and it's great being able to fit more in the frame (and it's a lot more when you compare it to a 3x optical zoom). The video is great on this camera compared to any other I've tried, with fairly decent colour reproduction (you can change some settings for video, such as white balance and have it b&w or sepia too) and the audio is excellent. There are no real compression problems as in previous cameras I sampled, including the Panasonic TZ5 which had AWFUL audio, really muffled, but this camera is perfect by comparison. A few things to note which I think are pretty useless gimmicks on this camera. (1) Smile shutter release. You have to smile like a maniac to set it off even with some calibration. It doesn't seem to recognise a smile unless you show some teeth and definitely doesn't recognise babies smiling. Thankfully it's just a mode on the main dial. (2) The higher ISO settings (ISO 800, 1600 and I think even 3200). These are pure gimmicks with the resulting pictures just laughable. The idea is that you can take pictures in low light, but the resulting pictures just look like they've been Photoshopped to within an inch of their lives. Detail is lost, edges are blurred and the colour balance is changed slightly. Maybe they'd be OK if you were printing them small, but for 5x7 I thought they looked really poor. Overall, it's not a bad camera, I'd give it a 7/10. Points lost because there aren't many manual settings and because I think it actually gives slightly worse pictures than my 8mp Cyber-Shot P200 (3 years old) and you would have thought they'd make a newer camera take better pictures than an old one. If you're not bothered about video/audio quality and want a compact digital that takes great pictures, the Panasonic TZ5 is a good choice, but the W170 really does have the best audio/video that I've seen on a compact digital. Good points: Decent indoor and good outdoor pictures, with faithful colour reproduction, good zoom, great video and audio quality for a compact digital camera, really well made, robust camera. Bad points: Graininess at any ISO setting over 200, not enough manual settings, can't charge the battery while it's still in the camera (you have to use the separate charger, supplied), REALLY wish it used SD cards too but I knew about these last two points before I bought it.
Top camera, best price November 23, 2008 C. A. Shand 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Had this approx 3months now and still keep discovering new features! It looks great and feels well made, better than most casio and cannon cameras. The battery life is brilliant -took 163photos in one day many with the flash and still had 1/2battery life left. The camera is very easy to operate straight out the box -if you are unfamiliar with digital cameras just click the wheel round to EASY mode, and all settings are made by the camera. Timer functions, flash and focus options are all easily accesible on the back of the camera without having to go through any menu's. The back screen is large and very clear considering the size. The pictures are consistently good and the super steady shot really produces superb pictures from what would normally be a blured shot on other cameras. The only negative point that I have is -you have to buy a fairly large memory stick (1Gb+) as the camera can fill the standard memory very quickly (but this is the same as most digital cameras now). -Apart from that I think it is unbeatable, very pleased.
Well Worth the money! November 20, 2008 Vashisht Bhatt 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The camera is extremely user friendly! You will not need to read the manual (except for the safety stuff). Clarity is Excellent! The only flaw.. You *can't* zoom **while** Video recording. But then again.. its a digital camera! Mainly for capturing images!! Well done Sony!
Not recommend November 2, 2008 Syed Gilani (UK) 13 out of 36 found this review helpful
I bought this camera,it has many problems. 1.You cant charge battery inside the camera, every charge you have to take out of camera to charge in the charger, and put it back again in the camera. 2.It does not charge from usb cable via pc,where as most cameras charge battery via usb too. 3.Its USB cable is typical n expensive 4.Its memeory card is also not compatible with any printer or pc sockets. 5.Lense result also average and moody 6.If you lost very bulky and expensive charger no other way to charge the battery 7.New cameras in this price must have 3" LCD,it has only 2.7 8.You cant use SD card in this camera and have to buy expensive special memory card, not supplied with camera.
