Good product, let down by poor maps. December 4, 2008 The first thing to say is that it is only worth buying this model if you are going to buy the Garmin mapping software as well. This is because you can't download maps from any other supplier. The mapping software doesn't include many footpaths, which is major short coming. The high sensitivity receiver works very well, in trees etc. It aquires possition very quickly. It is so accurate you can see which side of the road you are on. Following the same route multiple times and overlaying the tracks you get a very repeatable results. The barometer also provides tracks repeatable to within 10metres. I have used it both walking and cycling. For walking it keeps track of position when clipped to your belt (earlier GPS you had to "show it the sky"), and it beeps as you approach a Way Point. I found the disply too small to get a useful sense of your position, so I used the GPS to provide position, and track this on a paper map. For cycling (on roads) it works very well giving you clear directions which way to turn, etc. It is quite easy to build a route, and see how it is going to get you there. The unit has turned off whilst cycling. Garmin support recommended inserting foam behind the battery contacts; they say that it is caused by vibration.
Excellent piece of kit June 28, 2008 Ronbo2571 (Sheffield UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I always find these product reviews helpful as they are based on personal experience and hopefully not predjudice. This is my 3rd e trex and is a fantastic navigation tool. The first was left in my walking trousers and endured a full wash cycle to survive another day and function perfectly well! Such is the reliability of Garmin products. The Legend HCx acquires a fix extremely quickly and hotstarts within 3 seconds or so.This means out in the field,it can be switched on and acquire virtually instantaneously. If left for a day or so,the cold start is 45seconds approx and on switching off,the next "hot" start is 3 seconds. Battery life is as claimed,20 hours plus.I use NiMh rechargeables. As the unit will not be on throughout a walk(remember hot start time)I think it possible to have a 7 day trek on one set of batteries.I bought the Topo GB which is a stripped down version of OS,showing all tracks and paths. It is easy to use,but for route planning I find it easier to use in conjunction with a map.Once the route is planned,it can be sent to the device. On activation in the device it will be displayed as a purple line, with your position shown as a black triangle. It is possible to name waypoints created to give a name to your location eg,Blackden Edge,Dove Crag etc.I have found that when using a PDA for navigation(can they be machine washed?)sunlight can make reading the screen very difficult, particularly if there is snow about. The Legend HCx loves the sun, just like the rest of us.Finally if you want something reliable rugged and inexpensive (I'm sure the tight folks out there will disagree!)buy it.
First one faulty second one perfect June 5, 2008 Martinyazz (Dorset, England) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I too had a faulty one which locked up at random times. I emailed Garmn and they told me to return it and a week later they sent me a replacement which is faultless. I bought the topo Southern England map which is fantastic, shows virtually all pathways so I would recommend this to anyone as it is a great bit of kit,

Unfortunately I seem to have had a similar experience to Martin. My unit too hangs/freezes without warning, which is rather unhelpful to say the least if you are trying to use it to keep a track log in areas with few marked paths. Fortunately, after switching off and on again, I was able to get grid references to confirm my position on a paper map but this seems a very expensive way of getting that sort of information intermittently. I have not owned a handheld GPS before and bought this with great expectations. Sadly these have so far not been met. The user interface is byzantine compared to the TomTom we use in the car and the maps are far inferior to printed versions for off road use. I will soldier on trying to solve these problems but cannot recommend this product to others as it stands.
Functionally good, but faulty March 21, 2008 Martin Farrimond (Bristol, UK United Kingdom) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I had 2 of these from new, returning the first for the second. Both of them exhibited the same fault - namely they hang / freeze during use. They hang at random points, any time from switch-on to several hours later, so very unpredicatble and very unreliable. They hung / froze regardless of battery type, or whether the Micro SD card was plugged or not. I updated the software in each of them to the latest - v2.6. No difference. I can only conclude that there's a bad batch or design problem. Either way, Garmin are not admitting to it. If it weren't for this, it would be a great unit.
