5 out of 5 stars Searched and Searched found "The One"   September 22, 2008
broburus (Wales)
After much online searching, visiting electrical stores, comparing 37 inch 1080, 50 inch 720p, Sony, LG, Samsung etc etc I finally ordered this Philips 47PFL9632 47".

This TV replaces my 32 inch traditional CRT Sony widescreen, which is still sat in the corner of the room looking like an old portable T.V so this is my first "Flat Panel".

Having had the Tv for a number of weeks I can tell you I am more than completely happy with every aspect of the set.

I had no idea how much all those special background processes - "super duper make my picture better " type in built gadgets made. I'm a tad anal about making sure the picture inputs are unspoiled and not messed around so I was surprised at how well this philips cleans up the picture making normal standard definition pictures from SKy or freeview upscaled better than any other 42inch+screen I have seen.

I have yet to plug up a bluray player or Sky HD/or equivalent. But I have no doubt that will be incredible viewing.

As much of TV output at the moment is non HD this TV, (however it does it) ensures that even on a tv this big and sitting up close (8ft??) does not have the same issues of going "blocky" as many others I have seen. (although, as ever, it does depend on the channel and programme)

And of course the Ambi light is just a gimmick to make you go "ooooh ahhhhhh" in the shops.....isn't it?
Nope! It really does something special (particularly watching films) . I can't describe what, but I've tried during watching a film switching it on and off and scrolling through the different modes (1 button touch on the remote...nice) and it's just more pleasing on the eye with it on (the bumf describes it as eye fatigue or something)

My favorite thing........right in the centre of the remote at the top just below the on/off button is the All important INPUT button. So no lighting up your remote in a darkened room with your mobile phone looking for the holy grail of remote buttons.

I'm still griining from ear to ear with this tv which is makes people look at me strange but hey there's always a price to pay..

5 out of 5 stars Awesome piece of kit - very impressed   September 9, 2008

I can ony say how impressed I am with this TV.

The detail on standard definition is amazing for a TV this size, upscaled DVDs are very impressive with great detail and as for HD its just astonishing. I now see what all the hype about HD (TV and Blu-ray) was about. Its noticeably different to SD and DVD and worth spending the extra money on. The Ambilight is great for reducing eye strain and allowing you to effectively watch TV is a completely dark room. It also appears to darken the blacks, all very clever.

The sound is adequate for normal viewing, I use a home cinema set up for serious viewing however. Anything less doesn't do the picture justice.

The fact this TV was under 1000 delivered is incredible and probably the TV bargain of the year. Nobody else appears to sell this TV for under 1500, so well done Amazon for bagging such a deal.

The best advice I can give is get one before they sell out.

5 out of 5 stars I don't own this yet, but...   August 31, 2008

I apologise for this non-review but I am on the verge of buying this TV and just read the "Don't believe Philips" comments and am now in two minds... Is this set full 1080p HD or not? I really want a future-proof TV (as much as possible), therefore want to buy a 1080p TV with 100hz. It looks like a really good deal and a great TV - hence my 5-stars - but is the last reviewer correct? Is it only 1080i?

1 out of 5 stars Not 1080p ready - only 1080i   August 30, 2008
Don't believe Philips (UK)

Be aware this is not a real 1080p TV. 1080p inputs are downscaled to 1080i, video processing is done, then the signal is upconverted back to 1080p. This tv does not have the "HD Ready 1080p" label, only "HD Ready". Philips use weasel words to describe it as Full 1080p, and say it can accept 1080p inputs. However, you get clearly visible interlacing artefacts associated with 1080i.
I have to say I was happy with this TV until I started using 1080p inputs - now I feel cheated.

Just received this on the 29th August as promised by Amazon.
Perfect delivery and the tv is brand new and is a gem.
It looks very classy and the picture quality is outstanding.
Anyone Pondering over this should stop pondering and just order it.
Much much cheaper than the shops.
