Risking WD again, despite several failures . . . November 14, 2008 rockstro It's difficult to find reliable hard drives, external or otherwise; having lost everything from two failed WD My Book 1 TB drives (despite being mirrored), plus one LAN drive with a WD 1 TB disk, a couple of Lacies and several Maxtor/Seagates (which, frankly, have been the worst of the lot) there were two ways of looking at where to go next. Either avoid WD at all costs or hang on to the premise that lightning cannot continue to strike in the same place . . . my network. So, needing a replacement back-up for my backed-up back-up, I decided to risk WD once more and went for this Elements USB drive. With no time to consider the ramifications of having to format and mess around, this drive went straight onto one of my Macs and is accepting everything quite happily from my lone remaining SMB LAN back-up. Unlike the My Book, it doesn't sound like someone's operating a chain-saw by my desk -- it's completely silent and, although it's not Firewire or LAN, it'll do as long as it doesn't collapse and die like its earlier counterparts. Truth is, if you've got valuable data, one back-up device isn't enough. Short of storing everything off-site, external drives should now be reliable enough. We'll see how this one copes . . . In terms of usability, this gets five starts; as for durability, only time will tell.
Good One not bad at all October 24, 2008 Sameer C. Bandiwadekar (Birmingham, UK) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Western Digital Elements 1TB USB 2.0 External Desktop Hard Drive Good One. Quick Delivery in 4 days that too free. :-) FAT32 format - takes 3-4 hrs to format to NTFS. Needs a external power supply. Sturdy Case. Overall good product to buy.
Not bad.....for now October 22, 2008 Xristosk (UK) 4 out of 9 found this review helpful
Received the HDD yesterday, must say it isn't that bad for now. Yes , there is now power button but that did't seem to bother me, doesn't need any drivers and it'd not that complex(simple 1 sata disk no RAID n stuff like that) so i presume there is less to go wrong, i have a My book pro 2 1TB, just stopped working and i got a feeling all my data is gone. Hope this WD elements disk turns up to be good on the long run. speed is...ok not fast but not that slow, case in the inside is CRAP the frame inside that holds the actual HDD is fixed with aluminium stickers!!! and the controller board seems a bit cheaply made(don't care bout warranty,if the drive fails and i loose my data it won't do any good) i will have a secondary external dik which i will build by myself just to be safe if the elements drives gets'f***d up like the my book pro 2 i had i SWEAR I WILL NEVER EVER TOUCH ANOTHER WD PRODUCT AGAIN!!!
Good value for money October 18, 2008 G. Franklin (Essex, UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
At the time of writing this is good value for money and works fine. The removable plastic covers at each end look a bit tacky but then most will have this drive tucked away somewhere anyway. Note that if reformatting to NTFS you should select "quick format", it'll then only take a few minutes at most.
Western Digital 1TB Hard drive October 10, 2008 Mrs. T. Smith 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Since buying this product I have used it to back up all four of our home computers. Two running on Windows XP and two on Vista. As it says on the box this device is a plug and play. And it is. I had no problems at all using this device, in fact it was a joy to use. Money well spent.
