3 out of 5 stars Great for PC - OK for Mac   November 15, 2008

Fujitsu Siemens 1TB USB 2.0 External DeskTop Hard Drive
This is a great drive for a desktop for a PC. It is really quiet (almost silent) and works really well.
If you have a Mac though I'd suggest you look for something else with a Firewire 400 or Firewire 800 connection as the difference in transfer speed means that if you are used to Firewire - USB2.0 seems really slow, particularly if you are using it with Time Machine to do backups or restores. It's really noticable when performing Aperture vault updates. To be fair, it doesn't claim to be anything other than a USB 2.0 drive and it does that job brilliantly, just trying to point Mac users to better alternatives.

This is simple to use straight out of the box and for me easy to use a must. The nero 2 back it up was simple to load and you can can set up what you want to back up ie photos files music, we set it up just for photo's as we have several camera's and two laptops so you can set up what ever you require, then the magic back up button comes in to play on the hard drive copy's all photo's instantly. great item as you can either compress the file or leave none compressed, we chose none compressed as we can see what we coped to the hard drive. Well worth the money and small quite and quick, whith plenty of space left!!

I don't usually submit reviews, but I felt that I had to for this product.

79.99 for 931GB of disk space...? Madness. It's made the ambition of backing-up my DVD collection potentially workable.

So delighted am I with the drive that I bought two weeks ago, that I'm buying another one today. No kidding.

Awesome.

4 out of 5 stars 50 Years of Progress   November 3, 2008

Hard drives came into 'common' use in about 1958 when IBM needed data storage in large amounts; a mind boggling 5MB being considered enormous. Back then all drives were external. They needed their own air-conditioned rooms and would have a member of staff who did nothing but look after them.
In 1984 I was shown an external 20MB drive that had only cost 2000 and could be used in a normal office. Wow! We were very impressed. I went on to buy my own 20MB drive when the price came down to about 200 in the early Nineties. This one has 1,000,000 MB and is quiet, cool running and solidly built. Like all 1TB hard drives, only about 930 GB are available to use. The USB cable is unusually thick, probably because it is well screened to prevent electrical interference and the blue LEDs used on the front are rather bright. Needless to say the rate of progress still impresses me. In short probably the best of it's type currently available.
