Product Description Compatible with Mac and PC, the Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II has a quadruple interface for storing all your data. It?s equipped with FireWire 400, FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and eSATA ports and works silently. The My Book Studio Edition II is also amazingly ecological because it consumes 30% less energy than other external hard drives.

Perfectly fine September 24, 2008 Marvoleo J. Smith (San Francisco) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
A previous reviewer speaks of an issue with this unit going to sleep and causing all sorts of problems. I just wanted to point out that I've been using my MyBook for video editing and it's working 100% perfectly. I've actually taken it to San Francisco in my suitcase (wrapped in some tshirts to protect it!) and it worked fine. A super purchase. So much so I'm about to buy another one.
A fundamentally flawed external hard disk... September 7, 2008 S. Pace 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I run a Mac OS X Leopard network serving around 40 Macs and bought one of these (the 2TB model actually) to act as a network home disk for the users. For the price it's a good unit - RAID 0 / 1, USB2, eSata (although no cable for this comes in the box), Firewire 800 with the cable and also a F800-400 converter cable which was really nice. They come in capacities of 1TB and 2TB and are quiet and look good. Sadly, to serve as a network hosted volume this device falls far below reasonable expectations. The serious flaw in this device is its sleep mode. I've contacted WD about my concerns as during testing of my network I found the disk would unmount after a period of inactivity, and then there's no way of remounting it without pressing the power button on the rear of the My Book!! There is no way to override this function as WD have seemingly gone with a 'going green' mentality of power saving which has in effect destroyed many possible uses of this device. I've heard that the older My Book Studio (and not the Studio II) hasn't got this sleep function so it may be of more use. I tried a solution of keeping a user logged on to the server accessing their home folder on the WD and left it overnight to see what would happen. Came in the next morning to find two instances of the WD mounted on the server desktop (one with corrupt permissions), a couple of error messages and a crashed server that would not restart without a hard reset. Nice. If the disk was just unmounted or spun down to save power then that would be fine; the problem is that it seems to power itself itself down *completely* requiring a manual button press to boot it up again! I cannot understand this feature especially as the device is targeted primarily at the backup market to be used with Leopard's Time Machine - if it won't stay mounted or awake how can automatic backups possibly be made?! I'm very unhappy with the product because of this. There's nothing wrong with build quality, hard drive capacity or built-in features (eSata is a great addition); the problem is the hardly-documented power-down function which completely cripples the device's usability. This is why I give it one star. Do yourself a favour and stick with non-energy saving external hard drives and avoid mickey mouse hardware like the Western Digital My Book Studio II.
