Not for use with Vista 64 September 10, 2008 Mr. Tahir Sharif (London, UK) None of teh software provided with this is currently support on Windows Vista 64. The new version of MioNet (released 2nd Sept) will not support 64 bit Vista yet..... Taking it back and replacing for something else......
Great when it works July 8, 2008 C. RUSSELL 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This drive will be great when they sort out the firmware. If you get an early one (firmware 1.x.x) then it does what it says on the box. Otherwise (up to firmware 2.1.18) then it does not stay writable for very long. Also unusable for Vista backup feature (Business and Ultimate) due to the Linux OS in the drive.
Ditch WD Anywhere and it works a treat June 27, 2008 Mr. Graeme Allan (Liverpool) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this today from PC World (about the same price if you buy online and collect in store), but did a bit of homework beforehand. If you read the manual (on the CD or downloadable from WD website), it tells you in Appendix A about Shared Storage Manager, which is the software built into the MyBook. Once the MyBook is plugged into your router or ethernet connection, and switched on, give it a few minutes the first time, then check the security settings on your router to allow it access to your network. Then follow the instructions to set up your admin account and the date and time. After that, you should be able to see the MyBook in your My Network Places. Just map the PUBLIC folder as a network drive on each machine that uses it, and there you have one shareable network drive. I've managed to connect two desktops, two laptops (one Linux) and a PocketPC to it, all playing the same audio file simultaneously with no adverse effect. Hurrah. Does exactly what I bought it for. I expect if you still need to access files on the MyBook over the internet, you may need to install WD Anywhere Access as well, but just take note - the choice is there!
Crap!!! June 20, 2008 N. Roberts The best thing to do with this, is to remove the hard drive, install it into your PC and chuck the rest... The whole point of a NAS is for file sharing, and backup purposes... Cannot file share any useful formats, and when trying backups, half way though tells you you have not got the permissions to access this... and thats when writing to the disk...You have no hope of accessing it afterwards...even if any files are listed... Shame, but the 1tb drive inside is actually very good....
Keep well away! May 13, 2008 Reprob8 (West Yorkshire) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
The blurb sounds great, 1TB of storage with remote access to files and sharing without setting up a ftp site. I've now tried 2 of these and both have failed in the same manner. I've read that this thing has major issues with its IP address which means 80% of the time your router will not be able to find it. This makes it utterly useless! Not surprisingly, Western Digital have not replied to a single one of my questions on their support site. Stay well away from this piece of junk.
