Software first November 8, 2008 I. Skelly (Cheshire, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This device does everything it says on the box, but is best used after a bit of planning to get the best results. I have two of these devices linked over a Devolo mains home networking system (up to 200 mbits). I'm not too interested in the music side as it doesn't support FLAC and I use a Squeezebox system for this. I run the Divx Connected software from my Quad Core Mesh PC so it runs quickly. However as I have found for a few years now converting files into Divx format (software supplied) can cause some problems. First of all the Divx files are ever so slightly jerky when played through the DSM-330 - not enough to spoil enjoyment but enough to put you on edge after 3 hours of Ben Hur. This is not a network issue or a PC issue because I've tried it elsewhere - I think that the problem could be with the 330 as Divx requires more decompression than most codecs and the internal processor may not be quite up to it. Secondly AV sync issues - about 1 in 3 of my Divx movies suffers from this after about an hour and it gets progressively worse. This is not a player issue but a Divx issue. I've tried reconverting them and running them on the Divx player on my PC but they still go at the same place. I think it must be when they move from one .vob file to the next in the conversion process. The 330 player can compensate for this as you can adjust the sync as it moves through the movie but this cam spoil enjoyment as you have to use it several times. The best solution for this player is to buy a good VOB converter such as the AVS Video Converter (avoid the cheaper ones available online) and use the default settings to convert it to AVI (it uses Xvid I think). This gives file sizes that are about 20% larger than Divx but it solves both the AV sync issues and the slight jerkiness vanishes giving a very smooth playback (and storage is cheap these days - you can get 400+ movies on a 1 Tb drive) I've never tried the 330 via Wireless but would think you need a reliable high speed connection to get the best results. Invest 90 in a Devolo 200 system to ensure it works to its full potential.
Really frustrated October 30, 2008 Simon Scott (UK) Ok, so my review... well I am so frustrated. Why, because I know this device could work so much better. Thats the very anoying bit. So to skip back a bit and count 10... the box arrived, unpacked, quick read of the instructions and started to set up. First off I installed the S/W onto my Vista machine (dual core, 4GB ram etc etc) and it went on fine. Then started to compile the media database, which took it about an hour I would say (I have a lot of photos - 12,000+). Once that was done I installed the actual box. Easy to do as I have a homeplug network that runs at 85MB/S. 1x RJ45 and 1xHDMI and I was up and running. Brilliant I thought, all the other reviewers were right. WRONG... I noticed that the remote was not working very well... I would press enter, say on videos, and the device acted as though I pressed it 4 or 5 times.. so it opened the video folder, then opened the next folder and then played the first video in that folder.. Hmm. Same with general scrolling. Press up on the main menu and it will move 4 maybe 5 times with 1 press. Sometimes it just keeps going and going and wont stop. Must be the cheapo batteries me thinks.. junk them and put in some new AAAs.. same problem. I tried covering the remote LED to see if it was a remote fault but it still does the same thing. Very upset about this. So I start to trawl the net and see if I can fix this. Seems there is a firmware update.. good. I download this.. then the fun begins. Took me about an hour (and 3 memory sticks) to get it to see the .bin file. In the end it did update the F/W. I know this because the menus changed style and I really hoped all would be well. Sadly no. If anything its worse. 100% unusable in this state. You power up and as soon as you press a button on the remote it jsut takes off scrolling, or if you press enter it just goes off and opens the first file in the last folder it can get into. Hm. So, last option call up D-Link. Had a little chat with the guy at tech support, he said as I had already done everything they would suggest he says its probably a fault and its got to go back to the seller (amazon). Wonderuful. I waited 2 weeks for this to come into stock and this is what I get. Well, all is not lost... I just have to hope the replacement will work!!! I really do hope so as if the thing just worked it would be very very good. But at this moment it does not so it gets 2 stars. Sorry. Lastly, if anyone has any fix for this before I sort out the return in the next 24 hrs or so please reply here!!
Excellent. works perfectly and easy to setup October 12, 2008 M. Cunningham (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had this out of the box and connected to my wireless network (my router only allows access to allowed mac addresses) within minutes. Out of the box there are a few issues. 1) after setting the devive to 720p ws it reverts to 480p next time it is used. 2)menu can turn green and all washed out 3)volume control does not have a on screen display The latest firmware from the d-link site fixes all issues but be warned that the update via usb can take 20 mins to finish, whatever you do don't power off the device thinking it has frozen, let it finish. Once done the device works like a dream. it is easily the best there is. I have had others such as philips streamium, pinnacle etc and they don't even come close to how well this works. There are also a few new plugins such as youtube that allow you to watch videos on your tv from the youtube site. Overall it does what is says it does. Nice piece of kit with the only downside bing your pc needs to be on and running divx connected.
Great - if it would work September 29, 2008 macros (England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This plays back Divx streamed from your PC. Image is good and sound quality is also good. Plays AC3 fine. Would like some more control over the aspect ratio, but overall the best networked divx player i have had. However, out of the box the remote is useless, I have to keep pressing the buttons 5 or 6 times. It has also now developed a fault after 2 months where the screen is a washed out green. So its going back. If they can get the build quality right on this then it would be an excellent product.
Next gen consoles do the job too September 27, 2008 Smithdown (Totterdown, Bristol, UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lovely piece of kit. However, prospective purchasers may want to know that the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 do this job, though not quite as well. The PS3 especially is great - it works wirelessly and streams a video to your tv pretty quickly. There is some loss of video quality, but it is sufficient for lower-resolution video.
