drive works fine but watch out for non-UK power supply August 2, 2008 nige (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unit is very quiet. It automatically powers on/off when you turn your pc on/off, quite handy. I'm using the firewire connector and it seems to work fine. Warning my version came with a 2-pin (US or European) power connector, so I could not plug it into a UK power supply. Which is a bit disreputable of amazon.co.uk when selling it in the UK. Be careful what adapter you use. I used a shaver adapter - the only adapter I had in the house. It worked fine to start with I thought nothing of it. But shaving adapters have only 1 amp fuse, so eventually it fused. Also be warned, when it did fail there is nothing to show clearly whether the power cord is delivering power or not. An orange light strip across the top and side comes on when the drive is running. It does have a on/off touch spot but that doesn't seem to do anything. There is nothing to indicate whether the power cord is delivering power. I found that the underside of the unit heated up and assumed that meant that power must be getting to the unit. A call to Seagate support and they told me to return the unit for a warranty return. Luckily I did some more troubleshooting myself. I found that even with the power cord disconnected but only the firewire connected, it still heated up. My shaver adapter plug had fused - fair enough, it only had a one amp fuse. I bought a better adapter from a local hardware store and it powered up again fine.
Avoid if you want to use eSATA October 11, 2007 savvyinvestor 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
My 750GB Freeagent Pro suffered from slow eSATA transfer rates (40MB/s average), so I called Seagate technical support. I found out: 1) The enclosures eSATA controller is choked to give the same rate of transfer as USB2. This means, regardless of the connection type used, the maximum transfer rate is 44MB/s. 2) The 750GB hard disk inside is optimised for quietness and low heat generation. This has been achieved by slowing the disk down. Compared to its full performance desktop counterpart (model 7200.10), maximum transfer rates are 15MB/s lower, dropping from approx 80MB/s to 65MB/s. Access times are also increased from 14ms to 22ms, making the disk less responsive. Other points: The bundled backup software is on a trial basis only. The ON/OFF switch is temperamental. It's a soft touch design that relies on your finger to create a circuit. Dry fingers often have no effect. It has to be touched with something more conductive to work reliably. Annoying to say the least. Its very quiet. When using eSATA, a seperate desktop 750GB hard disk housed in a quality external enclosure will give you 40% ish more performance. The costs will be similar once you factor in eSATA cables and brackets. These are included with many external enclosure kits but are NOT included with the Seagate Freeagent Pro.
eSata not working July 27, 2007 dazworld (London) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I choose this product for its eSATA connection as my motherboard has this. But, the drive isn't recognised by my desktop. It works ok through USB, but eSATA is the reason for paying extra for the faster eSATA connection. Not impressed. Lights are nice though!
