Ok for the price May 9, 2008 N. W. Munro (London, London United Kingdom) I've had this disk for a few months now and it's pretty good at what it does for the price. It's easy to setup (I managed to get it working with my Vista machine and Mac OSX laptop within 10 minutes) and seems reliable. Once I'd transferred my media collection to the disk my iTunes installation on both machines immediately picked up the library and I could then stream the music from the shared drive. I had a few issues trying to stream videos stored on the drive to my Xbox 360 but these appear to be due to the 360 rather than an issue with the drive itself (the main issue being intermittent access to the drive on each boot of the 360). I'd say the main issue with the drive is the poor read and write speed available. Writing data seems to flatten out at around 9Mb/s which makes you wonder why they've even bother putting a Giga ethernet port onto it (you won't get anywhere near gigabit speeds unfortunately). But again, this device is really aimed as a basic multimedia server and to that end it does the job fine.
Loud and slow March 14, 2008 R. Patel I have been looking for a NAS drive for a while and didn't want to spend too much as it was for home use. After searching and reading other reviews I thought I would try the LaCie, as I have used their products before on my MAC. This time I wanted it for my PC desktop and laptops so for the money and features it seemed like a good deal. Once I had it configured with my wireless router, copying files took for ever. I then used the USB cable (also supplied) and that wasn't a lot faster. After I got all my files copied on the LaCie having access to them anywhere in the house is great, as long as you are not accessing a lot of files in one go. It can also be setup as a media server, but for the database to be updated regularly you will hear the LaCie constantly working as it keeps a log of all the photos, music, etc, but this process is very noisy and slow if you want to access the files at the same time when the database decided to update itself. In some instances my computer locks up and until it gets a reply from the LaCie I just have to wait! So for price and features I give it a 3, otherwise I would look for a faster and quieter external drive.
Sturdy but Setup not obvious in places February 23, 2008 C. Watts (UK) Upon opening the box I was pleased to see a chunky piece of kit and all the cables needed, including an Ethernet cable. The box is thick aluminium, no flimsy plastic here. It comes with a stand for upright or flat use. The PSU is a separate brick the size of a laptop PSU. I was setting this up with a Linux PC so did not bother to look at what was on the supplied CD, although later inspection showed this did contain a set-up program for Linux. I have not tried this. I connected the box up, turned it on, than after a pause found it's address on my router control panel assuming all set-up is via web pages. It is, the first page presented offers ftp and web access to the shares and a login to the control panel. The out of the box configuration is at it's most secure which is commendable, just one user called admin and nothing on open share. Guest accounts (no login) can be created read-only but not writeable. Some of the ways of setting up shares and their users are not obvious. It took me about an hour of playing about to set it up the way I wanted, some of this due to the ftp share name bug. I was disappointed that the Linux compatibility is via Samba, the Windows compatible networking, and not native NFS. A nice touch is the network time client to ensure the internal real time clock is accurate. During the set-up I changed the name of one of the shares. There is a bug that means that the name change is not carried through to the ftp access. The ftp keeps it's old name. Doing a ftp login to the root directory is allowed but it does not reveal the names of the shares. This took time to find, the ftp names are visible by noting the button url on the web access page. The ftp address of the shares is a bit odd and accessing ftp via a web browser a bit buggy. Best to copy the url from the browser to an ftp program. Access via Samba works fine on Linux, Windows XP and 98SE, no driver instalations needed. The unit does have a small fan but is quiet. I am using it placed on a carpeted floor that may help keep it quiet. The set-up pages give access to a log file that includes the system start-up, revealing this to be a Linux box with an ARM9 processor. Final gripe. Tuning the box off is a bit tricky and often takes a couple of goes. This review is based on the 320GByte version but I assume the 500GByte version is the same.
No Support if something goes wrong February 19, 2008 Rajan Kumar (London, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the Lacie ethernet disk mini 500 GB in october' 07. Its power adapter lasted for only 1 month, and died in november' 07. Since then, I have been following up with the Lacie Support team to get a replacement power adapter, which happens to be under warranty. Although I received one in Jan' 08, but it was again non-functional. Seems it was unchecked/ untested. I have sent it back, and still waiting for the re-replacement adapter. Its sheer luck ppl, if something goes wrong in ur product, be ready for the worst (atleast in my case). I would have given 0 stars as my feedback, if I had the option.
What support? January 31, 2008 M. Appleton (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having a nightmare getting this working on USB with Vista Ultimate, the USB drivers install but won't load when you plug in the drive. Lacie have no telephone support, its done by the web page and I can't get any response from them. I would not buy another Lacie.
