Okay drive - terrible service October 13, 2008 Patrick Dawson (UK) I bought the 1TB UltraMax drive for its RAID1 data protection and, to be fair, it has proven its worth. However, I would not recommend an Iomega product to anyone, nor will I buy an Iomega product again. The drive worked well initially. A bit noisy but then two big disks in a compact case will make a noise. Then I started to notice a strange sound from the unit when the disks spun up and it would take longer than usual for the volumes to mount. And then the volumes wouldn't stay mounted. So, I placed a call with Iomega supprt. Their initial response was for me to try a different power adapter but given the UltraMax uses a bespoke design of adapter, this was neither practical nor likely to fix the problem of a failing hard disk. So, Iomega agreed to issue an RMA. This is where the fun starts. Despite selling a RAID1 device, if one of the disks fails, they offer no service to replace that disk and maintain your data. I'm not looking for data recovery services (which they offered), just that they replace the failed 500GB drive and rebuild the array. But no, that was too much. And then what has really ticked me off is the return address is in the Netherlands and as I live in the UK, this has cost me 30 postage to return the drive. If you are looking for 500GB of effective storage but want some protection for your data, my recommendation is to buy 2 x 500GB drives and use Windows or OS X to create a software RAID array. That'll give you more flexibility for similar or less money. Just don't buy this drive and expect to have sorted your data protection problems.
Poorly designed and unreliable drive notorious for failing. September 21, 2008 Mr. Edward W. Kenworthy (UK) The short review: DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE I, like most people, bought this drive to use as a back-up device. All was well for all of 3 months and then the dreaded hard drive click of death at the exact moment I needed to perform a restore... DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! I did a quick Google to see if there was a simple fix and discovered to my horror that this is drive is notorious for failing after only a few months. So I wasn't unlucky: the drive is just really poor quality. DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE! And to add insult to injury, the default RAID setting means that if just one of the two drives fails then you irrecoverably lose all your data (I'm excluding the 1700 cost if you take it to a professional data recovery firm as uneconomic for most users. If your data is worth that cost then do yourself a favour:) DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE
Broken Drive and Very Poor Service September 20, 2008 S. Pollard (London) I bought this product from the Apple Store and thought that my backup issues were over. After 3 months drive failed i.e. the interface isn't working. E-mailed support no response. Live chat with 'Support' - i.e. a 12 year old child overseas -was told within 1 minute that it was a power supply problem.... curious - the lights were still on. They then posted the replacement to the wrong address. More 'chats' ensued finally got a replacement power supply (total one month later). Guess what! Drive lights still came on and it still didn't work. Contacted them again and was told me that they would fix the drive - I had to send it to them and they wouldn't commit to my data being retrieved. I was referred to a local Iomega data restoration centre to be told that it would cost 1700 (minimum charge) even though I am convinced that the drive are okay. I then found out that if the data centre recovered my drive then the seals would be 'broken' and Iomega wouldn't repair the drive under warranty. Enraged that THEIR data recovery agent recovering my data would invalidate my warranty I gave up (6 weeks later). Do yourself a favour and do not buy this product. Regards.
Nice looks but only ok product March 4, 2008 Jon Belt (Surrey, England) Definitely one of the best looking hard drive enclosures I have seen. Fan is noisier than I would like and seems to oscillate in speed which sounds a bit annoying (and noisier than I would like, fan never turns off). Also it should be noted you can only use the firewire hub if connected by firewire and USB hub if connected by USB. Obvious for some maybe, but not me.
A little noisy, but otherwise fine October 31, 2007 Douglas Clinton (London, England) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I needed an external raid solution to connect up to my iMac and after some investigation this drive looked to fit the bill. I haven't had any of the hardware issues reported by others and it has been sitting happily under my desk for a couple of months now storing my music, movies and photos with no problems. The only thing I'd say is that the fan is noisier than I would like, but there doesn't seem to be any quierty raid solution on the market that I can find.
