5 out of 5 stars A fantastic little drive.   November 12, 2008

If I'd got this drive without seeing any advertising blurb, my reaction would certainly have been 'Ye Gods! It's so SMALL!!'

Unfortunately the comment that it's 'slightly bigger than a credit card' spoiled all that for me, and made my first comment, 'Um... It's a bit bigger than I'd expected.'

So just ignore the 'size of a credit card' hype (unless your credit cards are larger than average, and about a half-inch thick.)

Seriously, this is a superb little item. It's as portable as you could possibly want, and I've been using it on both Windows and Linux machines without any hitches. In terms of performance, it easily stands comparison with my Western Digital and Seagate drives.

And it's just so pretty to look at, with its classy black finish. Even the hard plastic box it's packaged in manages to look high-class and cool.

I've started using mine for daily backups of my main computer.

Speaking of backups, it also comes with a little disk of Nero backup software. I haven't used this - I'm more than happy with my existing backup solutions - but for purposes of review, I DID install it on my windows computer... And a few of my previously installed programs promptly stopped working! To get them running again I had to uninstall the Nero software and resort to a System Restore.

I reinstalled it, just in case, and the problem reoccurred. I presume this was some idiosyncratic quirk of my XP machine, but I just mention it in case anyone reading this has the same problem.

It's probably not the cheapest 120 gig drive, but it's got to be the coolest!

This product has worked brilliantly for me.

It is sleek, light weight and very small.

First I installed the included software
'Nero back it up 2 essentials', (you don't
have to install this) onto my windows XP system.
Then I plugged the Hard drive into the USB,
there is no other power supply to worry about.

The drive comes already formated with Fat32,
which I changed to NTFS.

The software was straight forward to use,
and within a couple of hours I had my whole
system backed up, with no problems encountered.

I highly recommend this product.

4 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin   October 22, 2008

Plug and Play then Drag and Drop. What else is there to say?

Its a neat little external hard drive that looks and feels good. It transfer rate is good for one of its type.

Before you buy check the cost per GB of memory as it might not be the best value available when you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Rather nifty!   October 21, 2008

To start with, this is quite a stylish bit of kit. Black and shiny with a finely ridged texture. A couple of millimetres larger than a credit card, about 5-6mm deep, with a USB cable about 25cm long.

It comes with a mini CD which contains the operating instructions in pdf format (there's also a hard copy included) and a copy of Nero BackItUp2 plus pdf manual. I admit that I haven't tried the BackItUp software as that is not what I wanted this disk for.

So I plugged in the disk and my laptop (running XP Pro) almost immediately recognised the device, no problems. It only takes up one USB port - doesn't need another for power or anything daft like that.

It comes in FAT32 format, so the first thing I did was fully re-format it to NTFS, accepting all the defaults. It reports that there is about 111Gb free space. Doing a full format took about an hour - a `Quick Format' would probably have been sufficient on a new disk.

O.k., so the next test, after formatting, is to see how long it takes to copy some big files to/from it. I regularly use VMWare machines for my work - and most of the VMWare machines I use are around 10Gb so if this thing has a reasonable performance, that will save me having to lug around big external drives all the time.

So I copied a 10.9Gb directory from my external mains powered hard disk to the TrekStor, via this Toshiba Tecra laptop. And it did it in about 8 minutes - which, I have to say, is about half the time I was expecting.

Humm...do I believe this? O.k. - next test. Copy the same directory off the TrekStor and on to my Desktop. Again - about 8 or 9 minutes.

So I'm trying to find something wrong with this - and, basically, failing. It is small so probably quite easy to loose - but that's hardly the fault of the design. It seems pretty robust - but I don't intend to drop it to find out how robust. It gets a bit warm - but on these chilly autumn mornings, that's quite nice - it makes a nifty high-tech hand warmer.

Well, yes, you can get larger capacity disks cheaper - for example, I have a 250Gb Toshiba drive, which takes up 2 USB ports, cost half the price and is twice the physical size - but the TrekStor is still a really handy bit of kit.

I will try and update this review over the next few weeks and let you know how it goes - but, for now, definitely thumbs up :-)

5 out of 5 stars excellent little hard drive   October 21, 2008

Great hard drive, looks very nice, sleek and shiny. It is unbelievably small, and very light weight. As with all other hard drives, the connection is very easy, just plug it in and you are ready to go. Works like a charm with XP SP2, and it is Vista compatible as well. I was really surprised when I opened the box at how small these external hard drives are getting. I own two Western Digital, and they looked massive compared to this one. Build quality is very good, it looks solid enough, even though it is slim and as mentioned very light weight. It comes with Nero Back it up, which could be quite useful, but I normally just use copy/paste. Great capacity, more than enough to do a backup of your system, or to store digital media. Highly recommended, especially if you are looking for something very portable, very quite, and just perfect. Excellent product.
