FreeCON ! June 13, 2008 Ian R. Attenburrow 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This drive failed after being used just a few times. The famous click of death was heard coming from the drive which now had some very very important data on it. I phoned Freecom support and explained that the drive had important data on it and that it needed data retrieval to get the data back. Freecom were not willing to retrieve the data and told me that if anyone else tried to retrieve the data then they would have to open the case and this would void the warranty. If you value your data then this is far from a recommended product. The Drive cost me 45 Data retrieval cost 200 another backup USB device 50 Was this really worth it ? NO !
LOOK ELSEWHERE April 4, 2008 Philter (UK) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have an 80Gb drive. So far it has worked well with one laptop and one PC. BUT the drive failed to work with another PC. Listening with an ear close to the drive it failed to spin up, so clearly it was trying to take too much current for that PC's USB port. I also wished to use this drive with some older laptops running Win 98SE. OK the spec says Win 2K & up, but wouldn't you expect Win98SE to be covered? Memory sticks work with Win 98SE so why not this drive? Thats the whole point of drives; to extend a small hard disk on an older piece of gear. The CD with the drive contains no Win 98 drivers. The website has some Win98 drivers, but the serial number range is nothing like that of my drive. One of the "drivers" tries to perform an uninstall routine, rather than an install. One of the Freecom forums confirms there are no Win98SE drivers, and also confirms the problem with "drivers" that uninstall. The support team do not respond to emails, despite trying twice. Whilst this a stylish chunky aluminium brick design, thats all it is, as, with ZERO SUPPORT it has no value at all unless you stick with XP/Vista and never need support. Look elsewhere. I will not be buying Freecom-Unsupported products in future.
Not so mobile February 22, 2008 V. WILLIAMS (Leicestershire) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
This drive will not work on USB power alone with my Dell Latitude laptop. The blue 80Gb logo is displayed on the front panel but the drive does not spin up, it just makes a constant clicking sound. I have tried it on the laptops of several friends with the same results. I like this drive and it works very well with an external power supply or on USB power alone when plugged into a desktop but not on any laptop I have tried. The whole point of buying it was so that I could use it mobile i.e. where I didn't have mains power.
Just a bit of hassle... December 24, 2007 Mark G. Pettie (Edinburgh) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've had this product about 8 months and it has recently developed a fault whereby the connection point within the casing came loose so I was unable to access my data. It has been a bit of a nightmare to fix the problem though. I've made numerous phone calls to get information on how to fix the problem, or to gain authorisation to open the faulty drive. I have no problem with the drive (aside from it breaking...) but the process to get the problem fixed has been drawn out and tedious, whilst the customer service has been pretty poor. All in all though, probably a good price for what you're getting - just pray it doesn't break!
Not so good October 19, 2007 T. Marchant (UK) 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
After 4 back ups it gave up the ghost making a soft clicking noise, refusing to identify files and halting back up process. Prior to this I found the bundled back up software not particularly helpful as the file extensions it supported did not show some of the newer audio file versions, purely giving a generic list which effectively meant the only thing it picked up was excel and word together with pictures. 2* given 'cos I awarded half a star for every time it worked! When it was working the speed of backing up meant I needed a shave by the time it finished - this will teach me for being cheap!
