Another dead one November 16, 2008 Julie Levy (SE England) I bought my One Touch 4 three months ago in the US and run it through a transformer. Well, it's just done what everyone has warned about - no power on start up, just a brief flash of the light, then............nadda. Looks like no point in trying to exchange it, going by the other reviews. Avoid.
Well, it lasted a year... November 2, 2008 Mr. T. J. Wyatt (The Sea! (no, really)) Not going to tell you what I think of this Maxtor drive, just what happened. Draw your own conclusions. So there I was in PC World (spit, spit) last year when I saw this 500GB drive for only 75 quid. Took it home, installed with no trouble at all. Ran perfectly for a year then last month it refused to let me access my flies. Managed to recover the data to a friend's drive using some recovery software but upon trying to re-format the drive (hoping it was just a dodgy FAT) it flat refused to co-operate. Made me laugh when I opened up Partition Magic and the drive's partition was simply labeled 'BAD'. Like, laugh 'till I cried. So now the Maxtor is a curiously-designed paperweight and I'm shopping around for more reliable machines. Yes, I'm aware that all hard drives are susceptible to physical damage and/or corruption, but I do expect to get more than a year's service from that kind of purchase...
Seems excellent October 21, 2008 Petercats (Manchester, England) I bought the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus from Argos about six weeks ago. It came with a robust British plug, unlike some of the units reviewed earlier. The setting up instructions are rather confusing... the natural inclination is to try using the supplied CD, but that is for recovering your PC when the PC's hard-disc has failed. The actual set-up program is on the Maxtor disc, and is "launch.exe" which would not be obvious to someone not PC literate. As suggested, I copied all the initial software, (instruction manuals etc), on the Maxtor onto my PC. I later realised that the manuals are repeated in 101 languages, so I later deleted all those except the English ones, so saving a lot of space on my PC hard drive. The software driving the Maxtor is very easy to use. I copied all my PC's hard-disc onto the Maxtor to create a master back-up, 80GB took what seemed like several hours. I then set it up to back-up anything changed, at 11pm each evening. This happens in the background each evening... I just see the Maxtor light flashing for a minute or so. I've copied a whole lot of music files, big .wav files, to and from the Maxtor with no problems. All seems to work very well. I've never had to reinstall everything onto a PC, so I cannot say if the Maxtor back-up will work then. I find its presence comforting, as my PC's hard drive is about eight years old, and might fail.
Powerless October 20, 2008 Rachael Smith (Greater Manchester, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Okay, I've had this drive around a month and a half, maybe less. I got it from Argos, not here. And for a while it's worked fine. I have a really bad memory on my laptop so I use it to basically store everything. All my pictures, music, videos, everything. Then tell me what happened an hour ago? It refuses to power up. I've tried using a different plug socket, yet it still won't work. So I Googled up the problem and I was more than disheartened to find this was a rather common problem and the only solution was to either remove the hard drive and replace the casing, or to pay the manufacturers hundreds of pounds to send a replacement and to attempt to restore your data. There is no good customer support from them and to be honest it looks a lot better than it is. It might be flashy but the insides are flimsy, low class work not worth the money spent on it. I'm still in a bit of a panic at the moment (that's my entire LIFE down the drain if I can't restore it), but it's sufficed to say that I will NOT be buying another Maxtor product.
Doesn't work with Vista and there is no techical support online or on phone July 11, 2008 Jason Fitzgerald (London) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Doesn't work with Vista and there is no techical support online or on phone. You have to send an email to Maxtor and ask them to send you drivers so it's not very good. Buy an ioMega instead, they are excellent.
