1 out of 5 stars A truly dreadful experience   October 30, 2008

Dreadful experience in so many ways.
1) Not plug and play - my XPSP2 computer didn't recognise the drive at all.
2) This also meant that I couldn't install the software, which might enable the computer to recognise the drive. So I had to install it from a drive on another computer
3) Manual assumes that you already have a DVD drive on your computer to install the software from - that's barmy, if that were the case, I wouldn't need an external drive, would I?
4) Software installed, at least I could now see the drive - but the software dragged my computer down to unusably slow. So I went to another account on same computer to uninstall it - but even with the drive switched off, it tried to auto-install itself there and no matter how many times I clicked 'cancel installation', it kept trying again. So couldn't uninstall from Control Panel either -'installation already running'. Software very poor indeed.
5) Freecom Tech Support was simply dismissive - "Go and read the FAQ" was all they had. That's not support.
6) Running uninstall now - it has taken nearly an hour and it still hasn't finished 'gathering required information'

Such a pity. Freecom have a good range of products, but this poor experience of product, software, documentation and company has been most off-putting.

3 out of 5 stars Machine fine, software not!   August 23, 2008

Initially I couldn't get this machine going as it simply rejected any blank DVD I placed in the drive. Having tried several brands of DVD, scouring the net for help and contacting Freecom by email (I did get some quick replies but most seemed to blame the blank discs!) a free download trial of some alternative software showed that the accompanying Roxio software was the villain. Doing a little research it appears to be a slightly unpopular piece of software so Freecom lose a couple of marks from me for using it.

Consequently, I've had to buy some additional software that I didn't plan on. However, the machine itself is working really well thus far and overall not a bad purchase.

I'd basically advise any potential purchaser to beware the accompanying Roxio software.

Great product! Just plug them straight in and away. These drives are REGION-FREE so you can play any DVD. Burning is fine. Most software seems compatible (ULEAD Movie Factory does have glitches).I knew nothing about this kind of equipment before and it worked well. My Toshiba Laptops both have reading problems as other Toshiba owners have also testified online. These drives were offered as a solution which really does work. Highly recommended for use-friendliness.

5 out of 5 stars Great value for money, does what it say's on the tin!   July 19, 2008

This is a great little DVD drive...well, little-not really. It does seem quite on the bulky side-but no more than my previous 'LaCie' external drive. The outer casing on this unit does seem a little 'plastic-y', but thats the only real downside. And as it just sits tucked away on the computer stand you're not always fiddling with it anyway-so it doesn't matter.

The main reasons for me buying an external DVD drive were:

1) To enable me to backup my entire iTunes Library,
2) Backups of my photography (i have a D-SLR and take alot of photo's!).

How it performed...

1) I clicked backup entire library. I have around 60gb of music on an external HD, so knew it would take a while. The actual task took just over an hour and a half, and throughout the whole task, the only time the burner slowed down was to change the DVD. Once it was burning, it maintained it's speed. Very impressed, my LaCie didn't do this. It's also the same with burning CD's, and importing-it maintains a constant speed. I don't know if this is what most people experience with their drives, but my LaCie never behaved like this in it's 4 year life.

2) I was fed up going to Motorsports, taking loads of photo's over a weekend, and having to spread them across 3 or 4 CD's. I now burn everything in one go on a DVD, and it's faultless (touchwood!), and quick too.

I'm using the product on an Aluminium Intel iMac-it does have an internal DVD drive, but it's not as quick as the Freecom. I find it's always handy to have a quick external option. Plus, i can use it on my old G4 iBook with no probs too, which is good as the iBook only has a DVD-rom.

Overall, a great purchase. How long it will last-i've no idea. My Lacie was getting used 2 or 3 times a day, reading or burning, and it lasted 4 years, so had a good stint-so the Freecom has a standard to reach.

Great unit, as with some of the other reviewers, I did not use the software that came with the product I just plugged it in and my 3 year old lap top recognised it(windows xp).I have used Nero to create a DVD slide show and Fireman to make a data cd and also to back up 7gb onto a dual layer DVD no problems with any of the systems picking up the unit. I am looking for an external hard drive and Freecom is high on my list.
