Lovely case design, rubbish firmware. October 20, 2008 Dave E (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There are issues using this HDD with mac, the hard disk's power management can get very confused and go to sleep after a very short period. This means that if you use the hard disk with backup software, such as time machine, it will claim the drive is inaccessible and not do an automated backup, because the drive took too long to wake up when access was attempted. Also, I find that if I have disconnected the drive from the power supply, I cannot get the drive to show up on the desktop. It appears in the system profiler, and in disk utility, connected via firewire, but no partition is displayed. The supplied freeagent tool claims no drive is connected when it clearly is. The access light comes on, but nothing happens. Sometimes after a long time (30 minutes perhaps) the drive suddenly starts working. Once it's working it's usually fine, until I next disconnect the power. Searching forums online it seem I'm not the only one with this kind of problem. Far from it. I expected much better from Seagate. Shame on them.
Great But??? September 8, 2008 Mr. R. Owens (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a sound product and one that I have used before. I bought two of these drives to you with my mac. They have firewire and USB ports. So I butterflied them together and they were recognised by the mac straight away. The problem comes when you have to format the drive for HFS so that it will work with the Mac. What seagate fail to mention is that you have to partition the drives before you can use them. You will get an error come up when you try and format the drive to HFS. If you google the error wording you will find a link to a post on mac rumours that tells you indepth how to sort this problem out. It takes a couple of minutes when you follow this post. All in all though they now work great and I have had no problems so far.
Great price, Good drive, Shame about the OSX Software July 31, 2008 A. Simmons (Yorkshire, UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This Seagate Freeagent Pro 1Tb I am using with my 13" Macbook running OSX Tiger. The connectivity of this device is wonderful, featuring Firewire 400, USB 2.0 and eSATA, although the latter is only available to Windows users. I use Firewire as it consumes less system resources than USB and enables me to reserve the ports for other devices, such as mice and portable flash drives. The drive itself is very quiet and has a lovely orange-glow about it that is just enough to light the product but not enough to be distracting. It is activated by a touch-switch, similar to those found on JBL's Creature II speakers, or Apple's Cinema Displays. Installation and formatting for OSX was very simple, but that's where the pleasure appeared to end. The bundled backup software for Macintosh (Memeo Lifeagent) initially took over 9 hours to back up my entire drive (~70Gb) when it decided to crash without even transferring any files over, corrupting the drive and forcing me to use Disk Utility to reformat the drive to get it working again. After a bit of brainracking it became clear that Memeo preferred to move over small chunks of data at a time as opposed to a full backup. Once this was (finally) achieved it works quietly and very well in the background, constantly updating the Freeagent as the contents of your internal drive change, intuitively removing the need for any scheduling. If your drive is disconnected, it remembers any changes for when it is next connected. This is a great method of backup, but getting to this point was fairly arduous. For the amount of connectivity and 1000Gb for around 100 (~ 0.10/Gb), this drive is great value for money. This, combined with the 5 year warranty is a major plus over the major alternatives (Western Digital MyBooks / iOmega Ultramax), and as such, makes for a very nice external hard drive. Highly recommended.
