5 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality Ink Producing Great Results!   July 29, 2008

Canon inks are great and this Canon PGI-5BK is no exception. I'm very very pleased with the results and can foresee myself sticking with Canon printers and their inks. I have regrettably tried a set of compatible inks in the past which produced disgraceful print quality, where the colours ran and mixed with each other on paper. They also made a mess of my printer around the area where the cartridges sit in place. I had gone too far with penny pinching, and quickly went back to the Cannon original inks. It took many and I mean many executions of my printer's self maintenance cleaning software to get it back to its 'as manufacturer intended' state, even after I had changed the ink back to Canon originals.
I recently bought my Canon original cartridges from Max_Save (Great service, fast dispatch) who sell within the Amazon Marketplace. Oh by the way.. in regards to the feedback comments I've read by people who feel that they have been 'ripped off' in respect of the postage charge by sellers within the Amazon Market Place.. Please spare us from the exposure of your own stupidity.
No one put a gun to their heads to buy the ink cartridges. We are all made fully aware of the postage charge before we confirm our orders.
So why on earth do people pay for items, when you are not happy with the price? And then write lines and lines of complaints with no feedback review on the product!?
The bottom line is that, if Amazon Market Place Sellers sell a cartridge for example at 3.99, which would normally cost 10.99 on the high street
and then decide to charge 3.75 for postage per cartridge it still works out considerably cheaper than the high street! If they want to charge for example 0.10 for the cartridge and then 7.00 for postage, then that's fine! Sorry folks.. I'm just a bit peeved with buyers who leave feedback
which is nothing more than a complaint about a postage charge that they were aware of before they paid up! When I use Amazon, my decision to make a purchase is sometimes heavily based on buyer reviews, and I tell you what.. the night that I was trying to buy a set of cartridges with a splitting headache.. I could have done without numerous unhelpful comments about how they feel they were ripped off with postage. Aaaaaagh!

5 out of 5 stars Stick With The Canon Originals But Dont Get Ripped Off On P&P   December 25, 2007

I have tried compatible cartridges on my Canon pixma IP4300 and I can't be bothered with having to swap the chips off the original Canon cartridges and then clipping it on to the compatible, just to find the the bloody thing won't work. Stick to the Canon original cartridges for a stress free life of printing. Some people on Amazon have also had the same problem as myself when it comes to companies offering a really cheap price on the net, but when it comes to the delivery charges ( 4.50) WHAT!!!!!, really you and I know that a ink cartridge can be sent though the post for about 1.00. Do these companies really think that they can reel us in with what looks like a really cheap price for a cartridge that cost 4 - 5 less than on the high street and then make a huge profit on a unrealistic delivery charge. I have found a company called advantage online who sell a original Canon PGI-5 black for 9.99 and a full set of the CLI-8 cartridges for 34.98, which is a good price, but the best bit is that they don't charge delivery and its all sent first class royal mail. I have used them now on three different occasions have have been more that happy with their service.

5 out of 5 stars Rate the product, not the delivery, and check where you buy from   October 24, 2007

I've read a lot of negative reviews and low ratings on Canon inks, so I wanted to point out a couple of things to think about to those that read the reviews and using them before buying. You may find this same review on the different ink colours from Canon, but I don't work for Canon and I'm not a fanboy of theirs either (I prefer the digital cameras from their main rival actually!) - I simply use Canon printers and inks.

1) Some reviews are not rating the product, they are rating the delivery cost of the item. Whilst this is an important part of the purchase, I don't think it is justified to include this in the rating because Amazon provide free delivery if you spend 15 or over. This can easily be done by buying two cartridges. Myself, I tend to buy four or five at a time in order to have plenty of spares before large print jobs.

2) I believe some of the negative comments about delivery arise because the products are being bought from a Marketplace Seller and not Amazon themselves. Yes, clicking on 'Add to Shopping Basket' does automatically order from the vendor listed after 'Availability' (look carefully next time), but if you look to the right of the page, under 'More Buying Choices' and click on 'x used and new', you can order from Amazon themselves. Granted, it is more expensive but the free delivery makes it cheaper overall.

3) If you are not really concerned about the quality of the printed output, then yes, you can certainly buy a cheaper alternative from a third party. However, don't expect the printed results to be as good as those using Canon's inks and papers because all printer manufacturer's papers and inks have been developed to work best WITH EACH OTHER. The chemical properties of paper and the ink vary between manufacturers so different combinations produce different results, eg. Epson papers produce a magenta tint on Canon printers, etc. Don't take my word for it though, this topic has been well researched by Photographic and Computing magazine reviews, as well as average users who have experimented expensively (like me). If you really want or need the best quality prints, perhaps because they are being sold, then you cannot get better results than using the manufacturer's original ink.

4) Be aware that certain third party inks MAY (not WILL) damage your print heads, which can be costly to repair. There are several online forums testifying to this.

5) Compared to the price of other large brand inks, Canon's ink prices are about the same. Have a look on this very website at HP's inks if you want to check. Bear that in mind when reading reviews complaining at the price of the product. (I seem to remember that at one time HP ink was officially the 5th most expensive liquid in the world, even more expensive than top notch Champagne!)

I hope this is useful or helpful to readers, but feel free to disregard anything I have said as merely the opinion of another mortal!

Unfortunately one does need to use Canon chipped inks to make the ink usage software work properly. Postage rates are high, check all suppliers there is one which charges a flat rate of 4 per delivery plus 50p per item so mutliple orders at the same time are considerably cheaper.

1 out of 5 stars Rip-Off Postage   July 15, 2007

Watch this seller - if you try to buy from them, they'll hit you with postage charges that are greater than the cost of the cartridge. And it is rumoured that the charge is per cartridge, not per order.

Specifically, item cost 4.24, postage 5.98.
