excellent machine provided all you want is music October 15, 2007 Gary Hilton (Lancashire) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
At the time of writing this review there are 68 others already on here, but I thought I would tell you of my own experience with the ipod shuffle. I go the gym and used to have a MP3 player - just a basic "memory stick" type that I plugged into my computer to recharge and I could drag & drop songs onto. Unfortunately it died so it was time to look for a new one. Now I was undecided whether to buy a basic model by a less well known company, or go for a leading name. It seems to me that if you're prepared to go for a relatively unknown manufacturer you can get a basic mp3 player for half the price with twice the memory, but eventually after much deliberation I plumped for the apple ipod shuffle, swayed by a combination of the reputation of apple & (hopefully) a better build quality. I have had it just over a week now and I think I have made the right decision. Yes, there is no screen, but I knew that when I bought it. I know from my prior experience at the gym that I just tend to switch it on and let it play so I didn't really need one. Also, I have a mobile phone that takes pictures, plays videos, games etc and I hardly use any of those features so I figured I wouldn't need a screen to watch tiny videos on. The earphones are great - several reviwers say they fall out but I've used mine on the treadmill, rower, cross trainer, exercise bike and wave machine and they've stayed in throughout! I've got about 14 hours out of it before I had to recharge which is impressive, and although initially I missed the simplicity of the "drag & drop" method of my old mp3 player, its just a question of getting used to itunes and once you have it seems simple enough. All in all, an excellent purchase and having never had any previous experience of apple or ipods I am very pleased with my purchase.
ipods cost the earth September 28, 2007 Shopping kills (UK) 2 out of 9 found this review helpful
How much is an ipod really worth? ipods are one of the least environmentally friendly gadgets available. According to Apple they are only meant to last 12 months and they are designed to prevent customers replacing the toxic batteries when they wear out. So the 10 million ipods sold are all destined to sit in a landfills for the next million years leaking toxic chemicals. Environmentalists have been criticising Apple since the ipod's original release. How have Apple responded? By using less packaging and boasting that they are green. What are they on? The following is taken from Thegreenguide.com: "But while Apple declares that they are `committed to reducing the environmental impact of the work [they] do and the products [they] create' the iPod is not designed to have its toxin-laden battery replaced or removed. Apple can live up to their environmental commitment by making all iPod's green. How to Make a Green Apple * Produce toxin-free iPods * Design iPods so batteries can be easily and affordably replaced * Provide take back and recycling options for iPods and other electronics" Visit thegreenguide.com to sign a petition asking Apple to make greener ipods. Just don't buy one. I had an ipod. It lasted 2 years. It wasn't worth costing the earth
Please read this before you buy an ipod September 24, 2007 i wrote this (Bucks) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
The ipod is a design classic; they all look great and are really easy to use. The problem is simple: Apple do not build them to last, so they don't. Which would be fine.... if they weren't so expensive. Check out these extracts from the Guardian Money article "Is your iPod one of the bad Apples?": "...the Sale of Goods Act.... guidelines from the Department of Trade & Industry...states that goods should last up to six years, depending on their cost and expected durability." "Paul Edwards of Kendal in Cumbria found that his (ipod) battery packed up just outside the warranty period. `I contacted Apple, asked them to consider that electrical goods should last longer than a year as stated in Department of Trade & Industry guidelines and the Sale of Goods Act, and they have basically said no.' .... Mr Edwards contacted Guardian Money and we took up his case. But Apple repeated the same message to Mr Edwards - that the machine is only expected to last one year and no more." This case is typical, go googling and you'll see there are thousands of unhappy ipod owners. Click wheels give out, screens crack, touch screens don't respond, batteries give up the ghost, head phone sockets crackle and fail. Add to this Apple's unspoken policy to never recall faulty hardware (check for yourself, they only ever `extend warranties' on systems with known common faults). Then add to that Apple's truely terrible UK & Ireland Customer Relations team based in Cork. Forget the branding, the ease of use, the design and the street cred'. Only 2 things matter in a portable music player: Reliability and good customer service if it goes wrong. No ipod offers either of these, so don't buy one. Tempremental, and Amazon's returns issues! August 26, 2007 jimmyreviewer1988 (england) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought one of these at christmas, and it is a great product! It has great sound, easy controls and a great look! But they go wrong too easily! Mine stopped working in June, so i told amazon and they wouldnt Replace it, so i had to throw it away and buy another this week from amazon. I recieved it, and it was defective, and the Sound was crackly, and often the right headphone doesnt work. I told amazon and they told me they wouldn't help and i needed to contact apple! That made me very angry! A day old and they wouldnt replace it (In the end i wrote an angry email and they said they will) So its a really great product, Holds all the songs you need, and is very very small But i am on my 3rd one this year!!!
