I bought my iPod touch last Christmas and fell in love with it immedietly. However... now, after just nine or ten months it has already started to 'play up'. It pauses randomly and sometimes i can see the time slider going through a song but no sound. i took it back to the apple shop, they put the new updates on it (free of charge i'd like to say ;)) but i still have the same problem i.e keeps pausing randomly.
i would suggest that you don't buy the iPod touch as i am completely convinced that mine will stop working altogether JUST after my one year gurantee runs out. proof of this: my friend and her sister both bought an iPod on the same day last year and just after their one year gurantee ran out... they both stopped working within hours of each other. many others i've spoken with have had the same experience.
i have now vowed never to buy another apple product and will now have to buy a new mp3 player from a different company and i hope i don't have the same problem.

I've only had the 8GB 1st generation model for 2 weeks, and yet I've already 'upgraded' to the 2nd generation!! However, I'll keep the review of the 2nd gen for the correct section.
But I would *really* advise any potential buyers to order the new version. Since they're currently both priced the same at Amazon, there's no point in buying the older version. The new version has an extra 14 hours of battery life *and* an external volume control. So buy the new version for the same price as the old model.
As far as the 1st gen is concerned, it's simply a wonderful piece of gadgetry. The 3.5" screen is perfect for watching video, clear, bright, and with very good resolution.
The wifi part is such a novelty. I can send e-mails, check eBay, get route directions, download stuff from iTunes... and all without having to be near my computer.
I didn't buy this for music, as I have a Sony and Zune for that, but I wanted to see the coverflow. So I transferred a few albums, and have to say that the coverflow is truly eye catching, and it's easy to see what you have on there. Once you've selected an album, you can tap the screen to 'flip' to the back cover and view the track listings.
As far as sound quality is concerned, I've read some pretty negative things about iPod sq, and as this is my first Apple product, I had nothing to compare it with. Although it doesn't sound as good as my Sony or Zune, it really does sound perfectly acceptable. I didn't bother to use the stock buds, and I was fine with the sound. It's fairly neutral with a very decent soundstage.
I probably wouldn't recommend pairing it with a cold/analytical set of earphones, like Etymotic or q-JAYS unless you like a very cool sound signature. But match it up with some warm phones, Sennheiser maybe? - and you'll get pretty decent sq from it.
I would have given this 5 stars apart from a couple of things.
1. Although it's very small and pocketable, the square edges tended to stick in my hand. Not a big deal, but I was aware of it.
2. I like an external volume button. It's not a mark of laziness to complain about having to take it out of your pocket, tap the screen and then adjust the volume... it's more that it's inconvenient.
3. Smudge magnet. I swear that before you even have this unwrapped, the back will be smudged! I'd barely handled it before it looked like a monkey had smothered it with kisses. GET A CASE immediately. An earlier reviewer said the same thing. It's totally gorgeous, but it smudges like nothing I've ever seen before.
Finally, I love the idea of having an all-in-one device like this. You can make it look completely your 'own' by adding your own apps. to the front screen and changing the wallpaper. By the time you've finished customising it to your own preferences - nobody else will have one like it. It's totally unique. And after a while, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it :)

My first proper iPod - and it's great!! If I could have afforded the bigger capacity then I would have got it - thats its only downfall. Just means you manage your music better and you always have something different on your iPod. Saying that I've crammed about 30 albums, countless photos and many iPod applications (just the freebie ones to check tham out!) Definatley a well deserved treat to yourself!

I bought the iPod Touch a couple of weeks ago and am in love with it. This is such an awesome piece of equipment. It is so easy to navigate around the menus. The music function is excellent, I especially like how you can scroll through the album art by turning the iPod landscape. The video playback is excellent. The app store is a really good feature as you can download apps to use, some are free. I got a sports app which shows live scores for the NBA, MLB, NFL, football, tennis... The internet function is really neat and I was able to connect to my WiFi network at home quickly and with no fuss. Accessing email is also a good function, altough you have to be near a wireless network to access them.
The only negatives are the battery life and the fact that there is no flash player to view videos on the internet (apart from the youtube app alreasy on). It doesn't take long for the battery to drain even without watching video I have found.
Overall this is an excellent product and worth purchasing if you don't want to get the iPhone. This is basically the same apart from the phone capabilities.
