1 out of 5 stars Not a happy experience - unreliable and user unfriendly   December 27, 2008
stanley beamish
I bought this camera about 18 months ago - it has broken four times: Screen at back of camera stopped working twice, and the little catch that keeps the battery and memory card in place is too flimsy and has also broken twice. Once the camera was out of warranty (6 months) I had to pay for Pentax to complete the repairs. On top of that the interface is just not user friendly at all, and the camera has no viewfinder so pictures in sunny conditions when the rear screen is impossible to view due to sunlight are just point and guess . I would not recommend a small Pentax digital camera to anyone.

Finally, too frustrated for words, I have now binned the Pentax despite the investment and bought a Canon Ixus in the Amazon sale - it is a far far better camera all round. There is no comparison.

2 out of 5 stars Pentax A30 - not very friendly!   May 4, 2008

I bought one of these little monsters about a year ago. It is about the most frustrating piece of kit I have ever owned. Almost impossible to navigate the user interface - way too fussy and complicated for a compact snapshot device. I finally had enough last night after trying to take a quick snap shot of my son, but had to spend 10 minutes reconfiguring the mode via the extremely convoluted menu. Gave up, smashed the little ****** to pieces (the camera, not my son). Now I feel somewhat liberated - will now buy something with a more considered and user-friendly design. Nice pictures though, when the shutter does eventually snap into life. Not great for capturing the moment!

I was a little wary after reading some of the reviews on here but as I've owned at least five Pentax's in the past, I decided to upgrade my compact anyway.

Although I think the picture quality doesn't match my *ist DS SLR (I wouldn't really expect it to) it's still good. I have recharged my battery for the weekend purely because of the negative reviews but it lasted a long weekend in Northern Ireland and two weeks of mostly being switched off and was still showing full bars when I checked it last night.
Easy to use, good looking, nice big screen and although the same height & width of my old compact, the slimness is much more pocket friendly.

Looks like the old Optio 430 will join my other old cameras, gathering dust.

I've had this camera for a couple of weeks now and recently used it on a holiday. I cannot understand the couple of negative reviews that certain others have given this. These are my opinions:
1) Great picture quality.
2) Very fast start up time
3) Screen is not any more susceptible to scratching than anything else I've seen that has a screen. Try taking care of your nigh on 200 camera!
4) I found the battery life to be excellent. I only needed to charge the camera once in a week. Perhaps other users are taking longer videos with it and draining the battery?
5) Very easy to use - menus are sensible and straight forward

Overall I'm very happy with this camera and wouldn't consider swapping it.

I'm surprised to see only negative reviews of this camera at Amazon. I bought it when it was released and never regretted it since.

Some points contrary to the experiences of previous reviewers:
- my camera does not have any noticeable scratches on the screen after 2,5 months of *everyday* use
- the previous reviewer probably has a very sensitive ears - I think the noise level is the same as most other compact cameras I tried, and the only sound I hear is camera focusing/moving the lens
- the menu is very intuitive and PC-like with hints (very subjective criteria of course)
- macro mode shots are pretty good
- buttons respond just fine
- screen is bright and crisp, and remains reasonably visible even in sunlight

Pros:
- fast launch/shutdown (2 seconds at most) and capture (less then a second with hi-speed SD card)
- flexible settings (JPEG quality, video quality, photo sizes, etc)
- really tiny
- decent shots in bad lightning
- huge shots (10MP is not a joke)

Cons:
- battery life could be better (one battery is not enough for a day)
- no RAW mode (but which compact camera has it?)

In the end it is probably one of the best compact cameras at the moment - really small, and still capable.
