poor power supply January 6, 2009 A. Macleod (Aberdeen Scotland) The unit has a problem in that when you go back to the network it has disapeared which gets worse the older it gets and I have to do a reboot of the unit to get it back so its a problem if its not in the same room. I on my second power supply at about 4 mounth old.
Stick clear July 12, 2008 Paul Lamb I have 3 pc's and a laptop running xp, vista and vista 64 had problems with all and never got it up and running! Don't buy!
It Works Great February 15, 2008 Mr. K. E. Breen (UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I find this brilliant. Had it installed for about a week now. No Problems at all. I was planning on building my own NAS tower, but this has saved me the Job. I have several 500Gig HDD that i just change in and out of This as and when i need them. The software is a little slow when attaching and dettatching drives. and that is the reason it didnt get 5 stars but it is easier than having several of these boxes lying around.with all their power connections and cables All in all a great little device.
Good piece of kit, but NO x64 support February 5, 2008 C. Mewes (Cornwall, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Edit: If I could change my rating i would, and give this 1star - NO Vista/XP x64 drivers are available and at this point it does not look like any will be available for quite some time... buy with caution!!! ------------------------ Concerned about the bad reviews, I thought I'd give me opinions on this unit. I've had it running for about a month now, with 2 750GB Hitachi drives installed. Connected to my router and it all works magically. There were a few teething problems with setting it up, but once the updated firmware was installed, all was smooth. I have 2 desktops (both XP Pro) and 2 laptops (Vista Premium & Vista Ultimate) running on my network at the moment, and all pick up the drives with no problems, and access with decent speed. It is SAN - so please do your research for the differences between SAN and a NAS unit. My wireless network is 54Mbps and I can stream video and music across the (wireless)network with no hiccups or stuttering. It has a built-in gigabit LAN connection, so it will keep up with future network speeds, which will be fantastic. The drives run cool, and the cooling fan is almost undetectable, I've only noticed it when the room is silent (which is rare). All in all, this is a good looking device. The front face is plastic, but you only really notice that fact when you remove it to install the drives - this is the reason for losing 1-star. The build quality is good, and the drives sit snugly inside (no rattling or movement of drives once they're "clicked" into place). The software that comes with the unit is quite user friendly. Offering both a "novice" and "advanced", it will suit all levels, with each offering a differing level of functionality. I have a reasonably good level of IT knowledge and have found both configuration menus useful for different tasks. I did find that when I set-up the first drive, it "appeared" to lose one of the partitions on one of my desktops, but a simple reboot of my PC and the unit, and it reconnected with all data intact. I have "disabled" the initial "do you want to check for updates" on all but one PC, this allows me to use one central PC to manage the drives. Once it is all running, you access the drives via My Computer, they appear as additional drives "within" your current machine, and function as if they were. Their drive letters are auto-assigned by Windows on boot, I've tried all sorts of configurations, with additional external drives attached, internal drives connected and not, and each time, the drives are assigned the same letter, which is a bonus for any shortcuts you may have. The security of the device is useful too. You can very easily assign a password to partitions, which is a great way to securely backup data. Speaking of which, this device is fantastic for data backups. A decent unit, of solid build and pleasing looks. I would be happy to buy it again, and no doubt, in the future if I need future network storage, I will buy more of these...
Six weeks old and it just caught fire January 20, 2008 M. Millar 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought an SC101 and this SC101T at the same time. The SC101 is truly appalling. It doesn't work and fries hard disks. The SC101T seemed to be much better. But today, after only six weeks, the thing has just gone 'pop' and there's a smell of burning plastic all over my house. I haven't tried the hard disks yet to see if they are recoverable. AVOID the SC101T. AVOID the SC101. AVOID NETGEAR.
