Do your home work before buying this product. Look at the Netgear forums.
Had this item for a couple of weeks. Generally found to be very good, but with a few bugs. This will play dvds at full quality from a network hard drive (D Link 323)or direct from the PC. I have found a wired network to be the most stable and reliable. I have the powerline HD plugs but this product does not stream fast enough. It does not do as the product suggests, although noise in the wiring is to blame!!?
Converting the dvds to ISO files works best for me.
The EVA8000 does not have a gigabit switch. It will not play back full Blu Ray- the bit rate is too high. Blu Ray can be converted to a lesser format that the EVA will accept - see forums.
Generally pleased with product and the reduced price. It might be worth waiting for the EVA9000, reported to be on way soon if full Blu Ray playback is required. Despite the bugs, the 8000 is great for standard dvd.
It will upscale to 1080p via HDMI.

I've been watching this item since its first release. Don't be put off by the original reviews, this piece of kit is excellent, but you must have the latest firmware installed. (They probably all come with this as standard, mine did)
I have recommended this item to my Family and friends and some have taken the plunge and now wonder how they ever did without it. If like me you have a young child and you need quick access to music and films, without having to turn the PC on then this is your product. If you have the PC on and the Netgear digital entertainer running then you can see your PC desktop on your TV desktop, watch "youtube" clips and access the internet.
I have an NAS (network attached storage) which stores all my photo's, video's and music, plugged into my router, you could quite easily plug a hard drive directly into the usb port on the machine and it will show all the stored content. The other day I downloaded a file off BBC i-player stuck it onto a usb stick, inserted it on my friends EVA800 and watched in on his TV without needing to burn a DVD disk.
Set-up is extremely easy and quality is very good (depending on original video,music,picture quality). I use a wired connection, however it works equally as well wireless, although I'm unsure if it could do full 1080i HD, but Netgear already acknowledge this in their instructions.
The only minor drawback this machine does have is that Netgear really should've put a blueray or DVD drive into it, because that would mean I could get rid of another box under my TV!

Just got this today, easy to set up, plays all file types ive tried up to 720p movies, havent tried any higher resolution files.
Only issue ive came accross, supplied software doest not support vista x64, checked on website and no x64 version there either, although you dont need the software to use the product it would be nice if they made this compatible.

Looking for a way to watch your Freeview TV programmes recorded on your computer? As at November 2008 the EVA8000 doesn't support the .dvr-ms file types used by Windows Media Center to record Freeview programmes, so they don't play back properly - the sound stutters and is out of sync with the picture. (Although a firmware upgrade might solve this in the future.)
You also need to be aware that unless you have a very strong signal from your wireless router, the EVA is very slow to scan and download media; a good wired connection is essential - especially for HD material or large photos.
It's also very important to apply any firmware update from the Netgear site before you try to use the unit.
This is a product that promises much but can be difficult to set up and frustratingly slow to use.
