Product Description RangeMax NEXT extends the possibilities of your wireless home network by providing a Steady-Stream of up to 270Mbps, and is compliant with draft 802.11n. This next generation wireless standard utilizes advanced MIMO (Multi-In, Multi-Out) technology, which delivers incredible speed and range, and for the first time provides wireless interoperability at the highest speeds with other products with Intensi-fi. A RangeMax NEXT wireless network creates and maintains stable connections and enough bandwidth to surf the Internet, download MP3s, make Internet phone calls, share files, play network games, and stream high-definition videos, simultaneously at any distance or location in the home or small office. Because RangeMax NEXT is compatible with all legacy b and g wireless products, you are sure to be connected. Preset internal antennas and draft 11n-True-Test, high-performance testing and tuning, provide maximum performance and high-quality streaming every time. NETGEARs Smart WizardTM provides easy setup including configuration of WEP, WPA-PSK or WPA-2 PSK WiFi security. Very unreliable and Poor Customer Service December 31, 2008 Mr. A. F. Cox Netgear DG834N RangeMax NEXT Wireless ADSL Modem, Router. I purchased a DG834N from a Computer Fair in January 2007 to replace my Netgear DG834G which had worked perfectly for a number of years. Some 4 months later when I went on holiday I switched the Router off and when I returned home it would not reboot and I could not get rid of the "red light" - as I had given my old router to a friend I had to go and buy a Belkin Router to establish contact with the Netgear Support Desk who eventually got it to work. Obviously, I was reluctent to switch it off again but it failed on a number of occasions and I had to seek further help from the Support Desk who finally admitted that it was hardware related. I did a search on the Internet and was surprised that quite a number of other people had suffered the same problem and many had received several replacements or asked for their money back. One customer stated that he had also been informed by the Customer Service Manager (CSM)in Ireland that there was a problem with this model so I contacted the CSM and sent him copies of 10 of the complaints that I had looked at (there were a lot more). I received a reply indicating that the Router had been registered some 6 months prior to when I purchased it and I responded by asking them why they did not give me this information when I registered it as now 23 months had elapsed and I stood very little chance of finding the dealer. I also pointed out that even if it had been registered some 6 months previously the first failure had occurred within the 12 month warranty period - still they refused to do anything about and now they denied there was any hardware problem with the Router and could not comment why the equipment had been changed for other customers. Clearly all the people that have experienced the same problem must have imagined it because Netgear have indicated that there is no problem. I am surprised at the attitude of Netgear to this problem and the poor Customer Service that it has exhibited because they need to realise that "reputation" is everything these days and stating that "they are sending the complaint to their Legal Department" when I indicated that I would have a word with my local Trading Standards Department does nothing to enhance their reputation. A simple admission that they have had a problem but have rectified it now ( I don't know that they have) would go a long way to helping restore customer confidence.
crashes December 13, 2008 Johnno (Kent, England) Bought this 4 weeks ago after recommendation from 'which ' magazine as I am not very PC savvy. Got a BSOD on installation and when finally installed kept getting them regularly.Helpdesk just kept suggesting checking setup - you can go to 'level 2 ' helpdesk if you complain enough it seems and get someone who doesn't just send standard replies - but still couldn't sort it. When it worked between BSODs it was fine.I've now returned it, thank goodness.
It works Buy It! December 1, 2008 P. L. Barnaby (Birmingham, Westmidlands United Kingdom) I decided to do some research before I purchased and read the positive and negative reviews on Amazon and different websites and decided that I would purchase from Amazon.co.uk as they have the best price around. I purchased the DG834N with PCI Adapter WN311B saving my self about 40 against retail store prices like PCWorld or Dabs etc. I remember reading some where on Amazon some customers had problems with the software, I had no problems with the CD software of the DG834N so therefore would recommend using the CD for the DG834N as it makes it a lot easier than doing the set up manually. Unfortunately I would agree with any customers who purchased the WN311B PCI adapter not to use the software on the CD as it does appear its a bit bugy. I had problems with the software but the hardware it self no problems. You don't need to use the software on the CD for the WN311B as windows will find the drivers etc from windows update. I did experiment with the CD and unexpectantly got it to work. I would recommend using the CD software to set up the DG834N but set up the WN311B first with out the software. They work great and I haven't had the problems like I read about in other reviews. Every bodys pc configuration is different so those who did have problems either had a faulty equipment or they have issues on there PC. It can ofcourse take a lot of trial and error to figure out where or what is causing problems. One time I could not reinstall the software for the WN311B as it would consistantly say it was going to remove the previous installation when I already unistalled it. I searched around the regestry and found the regestry key that was causing the problem and when I deleted it I was able to reinstall the software. I don't think this problem was the software, I think that I might have had some malware or a virus as Norton Internet Security 2009 several times stoped an attack and after that no more problems. Highly recommend the DG834N and it deserves 5 stars but 4 stars for the WN311B, and just the one star deducted for bugy software.
Mixed blessing November 29, 2008 Snafu (Berkshire, UK) The Good: Stability and bandwidth speed (both compared to the bebox that be unlimited supplied me with), wireless range etc The Bad: A whole series of niggling problems: 1) Blocked sites doesn't work 2) Firewall rules appear to check established connections as well as new connections - the only resolution is to leave all outgoing ports open 3) Event Logging not reliable 4) Display of logs is in a tiny window 5) the router can be configured to send emails - these have an odd date a month in advance I'm in contact with Netgear support (an 0844 number) re items 1) & 2), but no resolution yet. I know someone else who has the same router, same software version (1.02.08) and blocked sites at least works perfectly ...
Great Router/Modem for a Plug & Play installation but not for Business Broadband Non-NAT. November 26, 2008 L. R. Baker (East Anglia UK) Good little Modem/Router, clean lines and would look at home on any bookshelf. For myself its "only" any good as a stand alone Wireless Router as after many calls back and forth to Netgear Support it was eventually clear that this kit cannot support a Non-NAT (Business Broadband) network configuration where you need to specify a subnet mask. In my case I need to provide a 255.255.255.240 mask for my router to support my network and IP range and this is not possible with the DG834N regardless of trying all of the configuration options. The router insists on using a 255.255.255.255 mask when set to anything other than NAT. Otherwise I'm sure that as with all other Netgear kit this router/modem is ideal for the plug & play style BB connection.
