buy at your own peril July 29, 2008 H. J. Ratnasabapathy (London, England) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
this is a product that either works or it doesnt; but you only know it doesnt after hours of wasted time on the phone at your own cost. The support is incredibly bad - they must get paid by how much time they keep you on the phone. after hours of failing to solve the problem they say you will get a callback but dont. In the end they blame your wiring despite the fact other products work. One tip dont phone use the email support it costs you less and you dont waste as much time.Netgear XE102 Wall-plugged Ethernet Extender Kit
I wish I had bought these sooner July 26, 2008 Pieter I live in a turn-of-the-century Victorian terraced house (rented) with only one telephone point coming in at the ground floor. I needed to get my computer on the second floor online, and the only way I managed to do that was to put a 10 metre extension from the phone socket to my BT Homehub on the second floor. As a result, the broadband connection suffered, and the wireless signal downstairs was patchy. I tried to improve the situation, but any deviation from this setup would mean the loss of either one of the computers, or one of the telephones. Recently, I realized that this configuration did not allow me to watch streaming video (BBC iPlayer), and I had to rethink the situation. During a search online I came accross the Netgear XE102 and decided to give it a go. I'm pleased to say that it has solved my problems and produces a better internet connection than I had before. Even though the documentation says not to use it in extension cables, the plugs work perfectly well that way. Which is a good thing, because Victorian houses tend to skimp on electricity sockets. The reason for the 4-star rating, rather than five, is that you have to buy two of them separately (they really should sell a pair of these at a slightly lower price than two individuals). Also, the bulkiness of the plugs mean that you can't use the socket next to it. Finally, the initial setup is extremely easy, but installing the encryption could be documented a bit better. It did not present any problems, but people who are not comfortable adjusting settings on their computer and use the trial-and-error approach may find this a bit daunting. In conclusion, for me this was the only low-cost solution to providing internet throughout the whole house, and it works well.
Out with the old and in with the new! February 1, 2008 Mark Reid (Ayrshire, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I recently moved house to an old Victorian house and didn't really think much about what problems it would create with the PC network. Well, you wouldn't... would you? As soon as we'd got settled and everything was up and running (yeah, the PCs took priority of course!) I immediately noticed a BIG problem with the WiFi signal. In the last place, the max download speed was 2mbit/sec and this new place allowed for 8mbit/sec so I was really looking forward to trying out this new found speed. Unfortunately, the WiFi connection rarely stayed active for more than a few minutes, cutting off completely for 5-10 minutes at a time. I thought I could live with it and just try to be patient, but it started happening more frequently and with much longer periods of disconnection. I considered getting someone in to hard wire the house but really didn't want the expense or the hassle that came along with it. I'd heard of the ethernet extenders before and was told that they only worked if the rooms were on the same electrical circuit, which wasn't the case with this new house, so I discarded that idea. I then thought that I'd rather take the chance and spend 54 on two extenders and have them NOT work than spend hundreds on hard wiring that may not actually be necessary! Needless to say... they turned up, and they worked straight away! No software installations, no messing about with PC settings, just straight into the BT Home Hub at one end and straight into the PC at the other end. I was so impressed that I bought a couple more to have that freedom throughout the house without having to unplug stuff and move it around if I was in another room for a while. One thing I WILL say is that the instructions say not to add them to a circuit breaking bench socket (ie a 4 way plug with surge protection) because they apparently kill the signal and they won't work. I never actually found any problem with this, and I've got ALL of mine plugged into bench sockets with surge protection and never experienced any problems whatsoever. SO there you have it... it DOES work outwith a same circuit connection, and it DOES work on a bench socket with surge protection. I really couldn't be happier. For cross-network file transfers I think it could be faster, but I don't really do that very often so I can live with it. I was considering giving it four stars because of this, but that doesn't affect MY use of it so I can't really give it a lesser rating on how it may perform for someone else.
Use the internet anywhere in your home January 28, 2008 Tealady2000 (Edinburgh) We have two of these now and they both work brilliantly with our BT Broadband router. We got the first one about 6 months ago and it has worked faultlessly with a laptop PC and recently we got another for a desktop PC. A miracle of technology!!!
Great works very well January 13, 2008 A. J. Cerasoli What can i say its works straight out of the box. prefect. Wroks on extensions as well. You can't go wrong for the price.
