When given the challenge to find a well priced small business firewall/router I quickly homed in on the Netgear Prosafe range. This offered good value and a LIFETIME warranty !
The firewall range offered exactly what I was after, the main decision was VPN capacity and any extra functionality.
I decided upon the FVS338 with a 50 VPN tunnel capacity and dial-up backup. The latter dial-up backup feature is rarely seen these days but in a fallback position you can be sure POTS will still be working !
When I received the device, I was impressed with the robust metal case design and simple layout. All the lights and status indicators are at the front and all the sockets and power at the back, ideal for those of us without a comms room. A minor point would have been to include the power supply within the device to avoid having the AC wall adapter.
Setup was simple, having also used Netgears home products, the prosafe gui although looking more modern and graphical it followed the same simple logical layout ! Within 15 mins I had done the basic config to connect to the internet, a further 10 mins and I had setup my 1st VPN tunnel with the device.
The Dial-up feature did not disappoint, I connected my US Robotics serial modem and using the GUI I simply configured failover, and unplugged my WAN connection. Then the classic dial-up noises started and I was on the internet via dial-up, obviously web pages were slow but this will be perfect for email !
The firewall functionality was very clear and simple to use, offering all the basics of NAT, source and destination rules. In addition there were Port Address Translation options and functionality to fully use multiple WAN IPs in a NAT environment. Also I liked having the option to add my own labelled firewall ports into the firewall rules.
The performance of the box fully met expectations, enabling me to make full use of my WAN connection.
So far as security, I was impressed with the separate firewall and VPN logging functionality. With all the options enabled I could see exactly who was probing my WAN IPs. As a final test I subjected my WAN interface to a Full internet probe, which it passed with flying colours.
From an administrators perspective the device has all I need to keep a day to day handle on the availability, throughput and health of the device. With support for SNMP, traffic monitor and log files via email.
Overall I am very impressed with this device, functionality, reliability and performance at an affordable price!
