4 out of 5 stars My son likes this stylish 8Gb MP3 player   August 16, 2008

My son (11) uses this Sansa e280 mostly for MP3s rather than video or radio (although he has few Goodies episodes loaded up and a selection of photos). The MP3/WMA music sound quality of the player is good, although we have upgraded the supplied in ear headphones to 20 over-ear Sennheiser headphones. You can expand the players 8Gb memory via a micro SD slot. Our 2Gb mSD expansion card works fine, and apparently a 1Gb card also works well, but it's possible the player won't recognise larger mSD sizes (e.g. 4Gb) - and only [MP3] music files can run from this SD card slot. The internal Li-ion battery is user replaceable and lasts ages between charges - well over ten hours and probably about 15 hours at the moment (7 months on). I can't comment on the analog radio much, he rarely uses it, but it receives quite well in our rural location and you can apparently record broadcasts. Note: All e280 boxes say it has the radio, but due to the EEC tax on radios produced outside the EEC, the e280 is also sold with the FM radio disabled.

The Sansa Media Converter software is a bit of a pain, particularly with converting video as it doesn't drag and drop but writes to the e280 itself (and you can't see the files via windows afterwards). This video conversion takes hours for a TV program, occasionally fails, and doesn't work with protected content like DVD films. It often also gets the screen size a bit wrong, so the video picture isn't as large it could be [never tried purchased downloaded music videos with the system]. Supported video file formats are AVI, MPEG-1 & MPEG-2 in MPEG, MPG, MPE or VOB (unprotected), MPEG-4 in AVI format, DAT, ASF, QuickTime MOV, and WMV.

With MP3 music files it's all a lot easier, and CD rips/transfers can be done via Windows MediaPlayer. Music files: MP3, WAV, WMA, and secure WMA are supported. The 8Gb gives about 128 hours of music, plus you can put more music on the mSD expansion card if you buy one. It's also fine with photographs [that also transfer via Sansa's media converter]. Still image supported files are JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BMP, and GIF. The image quality is surprisingly good on the small 1.8" [220x176 pixels, 65,000 colors] screen, and there is more than enough detail to see what is going on with programs recorded off the telly via our DVD recorder.

Mostly we use the Sansa e280 for MP3s though (we have a proper mobile DVD player for video anyway). The stylish jog wheel works nicely, and the screen is bright and easy to read for selecting menu items - the jog wheel glows a classy blue when in use. Overall we are very happy with the e280, and it seems very robust and durable and it doesn't tie you into iTunes or suchlike. It charges via it's proprietary USB lead, but we got an cheap generic Sansa e280 mains and car charger from Amazon resellers that's far more convenient [a full charge takes about 3.5 hours]. The e280 also records voice memos via an inbuilt microphone, and the e280 auto-updates it's firmware and software via the internet. It comes with the USB2 lead, a lanyard, a travel pouch, install CD, and headphones [standard small 3.5cm jack]. The screen does scratch when used by kids, so I would purchase a screen protector as well. Overall: highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Superb sound, easy to use, expandable memory with microSD -- LOVE IT!!!!   May 4, 2008

I am a complete beginner in this world of mp3 and music, although have a big collection of CDs with all my favourite music, and love music in general.

I bought this mp3 player as it was time to have a proper little good mp3 player. I had "external slot" in mind, as my music is already stored in microSD cards for use on my mobile phone, so I searched the market, and this was the only one I found which had an external microSD slot (up to 4GB microSD - attention not 4GB-microSDHC!!), in addition to the main 8GB flash memory.

I did not expect it to be a high quality sound player, although it would be nice if it was. And it surprised me so much, that its sound is clean and hifi, a great big improvement from my mobile phone experience!! And the entire use experience is extremely easy - for me at least.

I am completely unexperienced with music downloads, and have only managed to rip all my CD collection (100-ish) because iTunes makes it so easy, and allows you to filter your music on playlists, which you can then highlight-all then copy to a different external place.

I am still very surprised at Sansa e280's ease of use and sound quality.

I hope if I am lucky enough that it continues to work as it has been, but of course, I am saving my receipt, because it is warrantied for 12 months.

It is not as slim as the ipod though, and it is a bit heavier but nothing that can make it less attractive. On the contrary, I think it has a modern design and easy controls too.

I have not tried all its features, and there are many as I am sure you can check for yourself, but I am looking forward to check 2 features that look interesting for me: (a) it plays movies (mp4) and (b) it is a voice-digital-recorder, which can be useful if you want to use it as a memo, if you have a brilliant idea you wish to capture while e.g. jogging :) happens to me a lot

2 out of 5 stars Great while it lasts!   March 14, 2008

After less than 2 weeks of careful operation it has suddenly died - completely - without obvious cause or warning. It refuses to respond to anything. If you look elsewhere on the internet (and I wish I had) you will find many similar stories. On a positive note, whilst this player works, it's an utter joy! In many ways it is better than an iPod. But, only buy this player with a warranty (i.e. no ebay purchases, unless they're very cheap!) and be aware of the risk you're taking. My next is an iPod Nano, with a solid warranty ...
