randomisation? seen more on a chess board. September 15, 2007 Mr. N. S. Owen (oswestry) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Ok, I realise that 'random' is, by definition, a pretty difficult quality to measure, but let me tell you this. I've got the 20gb version of this admittedly smart looking toy. Sound is excellent (as you'd expect from Sony) but it's SO DAMN FRUSTRATING when, amongst 1800 songs, the same ones get played time after time. Examples: certain songs get played at least twice in a 1.5 hr session. Skipping one track seemingly adds to the likelihood of a song heard only half an hour ago being played again. Several tracks are played at least 5 times during 5 x 3 hour sessions. I'm not making this up. Now obviously this could be a problem with all MP3 players - I don't know. What I do know is that for 2 hundred quid's worth of storage you expect never to hear the same track 3 times in one day. Combine this with the slowness of operation, the rubbishness of the pc library software (both connect and sonic stage) and the inability to upload and play Windows DRM protected tracks (which they often DON'T tell you about before you buy - although to be fair Sony are apparently moving to this platform early 2008) and I would strongly advise you look at other machines first. After just 10 months of owning my Walkman, thats what I'll be doing...
Could be better June 11, 2007 Mr. G. Hurst (Glasgow) I upgraded to this model from my old sony nw-e99 mainly to get more storage space. that part of the player is great as are the shuffle functions. however there are a few minor problems which other people have mentioned here but i thought i would reiterate them for those considering buying this model. 1. screen is almost impossible to see when sun is out. i thtought this would be a minor thing but now its summer its a real problem when you want to use the screen 2. unlike the nw-e99 its very hard to change tracks when its in a protective case (which everyone suggests that you buy). it seems you can get a remote control for 20 but surely this should come with it? thats all really. a good little machine but if you want perfection maybe you should look elsewhere.
Let down by Sonicstage February 25, 2007 Doc Lee 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I purchased this model as a replacement for a Samsung model which was not "fit for my purposes". The Samsung was lighter and more attractive and was intuitively far easier to use, rather than the Sony which takes a great deal of clicking of directional buttons and reading of on-line manuals to get where you want. However, the biggest problem was (and still is) with the software, Sonicstage. It took me 5 attempts to install it over a 4 hour period. I eventually succeeded after downloading the latest version, cleaning and optimising the hard drive including removing such things as "orphan" files and then defragmenting. In comparison, Samsung Mediacentre went in first go. Since installing Sonicstage I now have the problem that my PC frequently reboots before a boot-up has finished - annoying but indicative that Sonicstage is causing some sort of mischief. Now that it is installed it is noticeable that Sonicstage is much slower than Samsung Mediacentre and fails on quite a few basic tasks - for example, transferring a Playfile from the player back to Sonicstage's library has never yet succeeded. Typically, the error message is received that some tracks (listed) cannot be moved, typically about 80% of the Playlist. Although overall it does what I want it to do, it doesn't do it without difficulty and without problems. I doubt that I would buy another Sony if this is the best that the Company can do.
Great Little Player, Just Install The Most Up To Date Firmware & SonicStage February 15, 2007 Louise (Glasgow, Lanarkshire United Kingdom) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I got this as a bargain online and read the reviews after I clicked on "Confirm Order". (Never a good idea to do that!). People were reporting the nightmares of using Connect/SonicStage software, and I was convinced I'd regret my purchase. However someone recommending installing the Firmware 3.0 and SonicStage 4.2 from the Sony site..and the software transferred files no problem. (Think this applies to NWA1000 and NWA3000 too?). In fact I have no moans about it at all seeing as I found a volume hack for it online! Even with AVLS off the volume was still kinda weedy, but the hack makes the player just about Perfect.
Software BIG problem January 18, 2007 James A. Tookey (UK) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Got this for a birthday present and when I first saw it I thought it was amazing. It is one of the most attractive mp3 players I've seen. However we have had to take it back after 3 days spending hours trying to get the software to work. The software that came with it was SonicStage - Sony's answer to microsoft's "sync tools". However, when trying to install it an error occurred meaning that it could not run. I then tried to download the latest version which installed fine this time only to find exactly the same error when trying to run it. Sony had a guide on how to fix this which implies many people have the same problem. The guide did not fix the problem and after reading other people comments on exactly the same problem, I tried various different methods. I am studying a Computer Science degree and could not solve the problem - anybody with little computer knowledge would be stuck. From what I have read in order to use a walkman product you need to use Sony's sonicstage. There are no other alternatives which automatically makes this MP3 player very limited. I have now purchased a different player and am very happy with it. Be careful with Sony products for now, maybe they'll let you use other programs event. Although this player was very attractive and seemed to be everything I wanted, the best advice I can give is avoid unless you have the time and patience to spend hours on trying to make it functional.
