I am not impressed with either the product or the after sale service December 19, 2007 thomoslt@hotmail.com (England) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Looks nice, but as yet unable to use product. Even though I have windows XP (work computer) I am unable to use this product. Was able to download SonicStage and thats as far as I could get. I could not access any of the drop folders or transfer tab. It took some time to get any feedback from the company that I purchased the product from (via Amazon). There is no telephone contact only e-mails, which took an age. The feedback from the company was that they could not take the product back as it had been used! Well how else would I have known that I could not use this product - by telepathy! The product is also supposed to have a "registration document" in with the pack that too was nowhere to be seen. I have asked them 3 times about this missing link, but alas they chose to ignore that query. So I am left with a product which is of little or no use. Buyers beware.
Good for music and BBC podcasts - beat the gym blues November 13, 2007 Peter Stamer (Wilts) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this Walkman, my first MP3 player, to help overcome boredom in the gym. I wanted to listen to Radio 4 podcasts and this has been successfully achieved. Music also sounds clear and detailed when using sports earphones (read further). The FM radio is fine outdoors but worse indoors, hissy in the gym, and overcome by electrical interference when on the cross-trainer. (The `F' at the end of NW-S203F indicates a player equipped with FM radio - not all models have it). The interesting design and value-added sports features are mentioned elsewhere. I was amused by the calorie counter which gives an estimate of the calories you've burnt, followed by graphics of how many sweets, cups of coffee, slices of cake, or muffins that equates to - or you can now go and eat. The PDF manual is lengthy (frustrating when you want to get started), clear and well written. The elasticated Velcro armband is an effective device holder and incorporates a plastic clip which prevents the player sliding out. However the clip is pretty tenacious and is located within the holder at the back (against your arm). This means you have to take the armband off if you wish to see the Walkman's screen for any reason (e.g. when changing from playing music to the FM radio, view the stopwatch, or you wish visually to find a particular tack or album without having to listen to the start of each one). This is a bit of a nuisance. In addition, the stiff clip requires a forefinger and thumb pluck in order to release it, which is a bit painful of the finger tips or else requires fingernails in good order. An essential USB cable is needed to charge the battery and upload/delete songs on the Walkman. The mini USB socket is neatly hidden away behind a cap at the bottom of the player. However, in perverse fashion, the socket is recessed which means normal USB plugs aren't quite long enough to make contact! So don't lose the supplied, rather stiff, proprietary Hi-speed USB 2.0 lead. (I suspect you could whittle off the corners of a normal lead with a craft knife until it fitted, if you really got stuck). You can also transfer computer files onto the Walkman using Windows Explorer, but remember you'll need that special USB cable if you're downloading at a different location. Addressing some of the points raised by other contributors: 1. `no off switch so the battery flattens': Just press the STOP switch, then slide the shuttle magnetic switch into the HOLD position so nothing will play. 2. `earphones fall out when running': consider buying a Sony NW-S203F from USA. US version comes with sports earphones which clip behind each ear (and it's cheaper than UK version). Sound quality seems v. good to me and doesn't fully block out ambient noise (which is good from a safety point of view), unless you have the volume wound up. 3. `UK version only comes with armband and no clip': true also of the US version (so you can't clip it to your clothing/pocket). There is a strap hole at the top end (no strap provided), so presumably you could hang the Walkman around your neck. However, the G-activated sports functions then wouldn't work (they need the rhythmic swing of your arm). 4. `3 minutes' charge gives 3 hours play': Mine took 40 minutes to fully charge and I only got about 7 or so hours' play out of it. I've just switched off the G sensor, which should help. But this isn't a problem as the built-in lithium-ion battery charges for free from your PC's USB port. Sony claim up to 17 hours per charge, or 5 hours when using the radio, if following a power-saving regime. Finally, you can only upload and remove songs/podcasts from the NW-S203F via Sony's SonicStage software which uses proprietary ATRAC audio format (possibly giving higher quality sound/ smaller file size, I'm no judge). I've just found a notice on the internet that after March 2008, Sony has announced that it intends to `move to a Windows Media Technology platform for Walkman products in the United States, Canada and Europe'. Sony says it will `provide the best possible guidance on how to successfully transfer your ATRAC music library to an MP3 or Windows Media-compatible format.' Overall, a neat, clever device with some useful extra functions. The volume and stop/start controls are a bit small, fiddly and hard to find when stuck on the side of your arm but might get easier to use with familiarity. The screen is not visible when on your arm and you can't release the Walkman from its holder without taking the whole Velcro armband off. My US-sourced Walkman came with a voucher for 5 free song downloads (to help you find Sony's CONNECT Music Store!). Yet to be redeemed. I'm happy with this player and can recommend it. 4 stars.
My first MP3 Player October 26, 2007 Mark O'donnell (Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was hesitant to even make the jump from my trusty old faithful CD player to MP3 player being a bit of a techno fobe and afraid to even tinker with the dials on my Hi-Fi at home incase I ruin it. I read other reviews and as a few mentioned that the headphones were not the best decided to upgrade to Sony sports thingammy bobs that actually stay on my ears when running on the beach . I was really looking for a budget MP3 Player to test the water and I've even found that after a bit of frustration tinkering around with the software supplied that it is not all that difficult to load mp3's. I must read the manual "RTFM" to find out how to delete old tunes though but if I can get this far without even reading the manual anyone not tuned in to the moon can! Oh by the way superb sound especially for the price better than expected I've had the Player now for one day and so far very impressed indeed the CD player will be gathering dust now Im cool and down with the kid's Would have given it 5 out of 5 if the original headphones supplied were better but for the price a great buy!
SPLASHPROOF +++ August 3, 2007 David Bishop 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Accidentally stuck mine in the washing machine, came through absolutely fine. If you are worried about sweating lots or being rained on buy this, but replace the headphones with some proper water resistant ones as the supplied ones got sweated to death within a few weeks.
Ok MP3, but software problems June 24, 2007 Graham P. Lewis (Newport, South Wales United Kingdom) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Nice looking player, but software not compatible with windows vista. Luckily had an older laptop with windows xp, which caused no problem. Transferring music was quite simple when you get the hang of it. To change from track to track can be a bit problematic as mine just seems to go to the beginning of the track I'm listening to, not necessarily the next one. Hold button is a good idea, but no off switch, so, as previous reviewers have said, it could be on but you're not aware of it. Another small point, when it's on your arm, it's difficult to see the text - but then again that could be my eyesight... Overall, not too bad, but look around - you will have to get better headphones as well
