3 out of 5 stars Curate's egg   November 20, 2008

Overall, this is probably a good-value drive, but it certainly has some significant weaknesses.

Firstly, there is no power switch (unlike my old One Touch drive). It does enter an idle mode after a user-programmable period, and then only burns 5w instead of 14w, but even a steady 5w will cost more than 5 p.a., just for one little device. If you only use the drive for a short time each day, you might prefer to switch it off after use...but there is no switch. Mind you, like most power adapters, this one uses 2-3w even when not connected to the drive, so maybe switching it off at the mains socket is a better option.

Secondly, the shape is an absolute pain, really not clever, even if someone at Maxtor thinks it looks smart. It's designed to be used vertically but isn't very stable and could easily be knocked over. The trouble is, because of the wedge-shape, it doesn't lend itself to being laid on its side, especially since its rubber feet are only on the base. Maxtor support people tell me it is ok to use it horizontally, but you'd do well to stick some rubber feet on it first. Even then, it would look silly and you wouldn't be able to stack another drive on top (although the scooped-out side could become a useful paperclip tray?).

Thirdly, the software that comes with it, while easy to use and effective as far as it goes, cannot back up locked files, i.e. anything you happen to be working on when a scheduled backup takes place, like your Outlook pst file. So the only sensible way to use it seems to be to take a manual backup immediately after booting, before starting any work. I've abandoned it in favour of Acronis True Image and recommend you do likewise, in which case other issues I have with the software will be irrelevant (so I won't go into them here). Instead of Acronis, you could use Norton Ghost or Norton Save&Restore - both are preferred by Which? to Acronis.

Note that you don't get the SafetyDrill imaging software that comes with the Plus version of this drive. That won't matter, if you use Acronis or Norton. But the Plus version does also offer a Firewire connection, encryption and folder sync. These may or may not matter to you.

One other minor moan - the USB cable that comes with this drive (mini-USB at the Maxtor end) is a tad short at 1.2m or so.

Let's be positive! Performance is excellent, it comes NTFS-formatted, is quiet and has a power-saving mode. The OneTouch button may be useful for launching you backup software. The warranty is five years - excellent - but with any luck you won't need it; my original OneTouch drive is still going strong after a good few years.

Would I buy it again? Probably not. I'd look for a sensible rectangular box that could be laid flat and stacked. But, ideally, it would also have Maxtor's 5-year warranty, quiet running and power management. Hmmm...perhaps I'd buy the Maxtor, after all.
