4 out of 5 stars Simple, capable and convenient wee player!   October 31, 2008
James McGregor
If you're looking for a MP3 player with a reasonably large capacity and are prepared to eschew features such as a display in favour of size, you can't go far wrong with one of these.

It's dead easy to use - simply take off the cap on the end of it, shove it into a USB port and drag the music you want on it in Windows Explorer. Or use Windows Media Player, Winamp or whatever floats your boat instead. Anyway, the point is that you don't need some crappy application to transfer music to and fro, nor do you need to convert it to some icky proprietory format before it can be played.

The player itself is small, light and easy to use. It automatically organises the music into alphanumeric order and plays it thus, so provided that you've prepended the appropriate track number to each file, they will get played in order.

Sounds quality is good to excellent. The music I played on it is mostly WMA ripped at 128Kbps and it sounds the business. However, like just about everyone else who bought this player, I junked the supplied headphones for some decent ones instead - Sennheiser CX300s in my case.

The only quibble I have is that finding the right album can get a bit tedious, as there's only one slide button that does it and it only skips forward. So if you want to listen to the album before the one you're currently playing, you'll need to skip through all the others to get to it. The slide button is also used to toggle repeat and shuffle, which frankly I'd be quite happy to drop for the ability to skip back an album.

Anyway, apart from that, it's an excellent wee player. Battery life is easily over 8 hours and sound quality is very good. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This doesn't have a screen. Who cares? This little player is a beauty!   October 10, 2008

This is my 4th Creative player, as part of the anti ipod brigade I've always found Creative to be the best alternative. I decided to get this (my current other player is the fantastic Vision: M) purely for my (rather lengthy) commute to work. It gets thrown around in my bag so I didn't want a screen as it would only get scratched, and really, why do you need one anyway if it's not also a video player? I wanted a fair amount of memory (4 gig is plenty). I also didn't want an expensive player just in case it gets lost/stolen/dropped underneath the train.

This ticked all boxes and as an added bonus is like a little memory stick, it's tiny, easy to use and you can literally just plug it into you're PC and you're done.

Out of the box this took just over 2 hours to fully charge and a few minutes to transfer approximately 2gig of music onto it. The sound, while not being quite as good as some other Creative players, is more than fine considering the price (I use with Grado SR 80s - I can't comment on the headphones that came with the player), and I generally get 2 day's commuting out of it (around 6 hours). It may even last longer than this, but I tend to charge as soon I see the red flashing light to avoid it running out on the way home.

*edit* having yesterday forgotten to charge it even though it was flashing red when I got to work, it lasted the journey home and back again, so a good 8-9 hours this will last.

Simply put, for what I need a music player to do, this could not be better. Very happy :)

5 out of 5 stars fantastic - if you can do without a screen   August 25, 2008

I was totally fed up with mp3 players freezing up. Especially with radio podcasts which can go on for a couple of hours or more.
This was my last shot and after 6 months or so, this little gem has never given any trouble - even after being left in my work jeans, put in the
washing machine and going through the longest wash cycle and a 1200 spin for luck.
Ok, it's not got a screen, but I'm used to that now.
Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars a mobile player that frankly isn't mobile   June 3, 2008

I have two creative zen's and bought two more for friends, so I am not hostile to the company as such.

But this is ridiculous.

The USB cap flies off at a moment's notice, and there is no realistic way of attaching it, besides (as I've done) with glue and thread. A minor but significant annoyance.

The more serious problem is that the battery life drains away fast, and there seems no way to prevent it. It is possible to turn the thing 'off', but experimentation has proven that it still burns power in this state. Sad that there is no 'hard' switch for doing such a simple job as disconnecting the power. Sad, that is, until you realise there is a hard switch for switching between shuffle and non-shuffle modes! What kind of hipster mutant is more concerned with shuffling than turning things off and on?

Otherwise, price good for clear sound and more storage than you'll need.

Another serious good point to most Creative USB players is that you can store anything on them. So mine functions as jukebox and briefcase.

5 out of 5 stars Best simple mp3 player   May 4, 2008

I have had my muvo 4gb for a while now, and it is by far the best mp3 player on the market. The storage space is huge and more than enough for any journey either commuting or for longer journeys, and the battery life is more than enough, unless you're travelling abroad you should be able to get access to a usb port to charge it if you need.

The sound is excellent through a decent set of earphones, I replaced the supplied ones with a set of Creative's Creative Labs EP-630/A Earphones (under 7 on amazon) and the sound is excellent much better than any ipod, they also come with three sets of earbud rubbers in different sizes, so experiment for comfort and sound if you get a set of these earphones .

The base boost function, I have found, is not even needed for most of the music I listen to, but when it is, only the first level is needed (There are three levels off, 1 & 2 you press the button until you get the desired level).

As to the lack of a display screen, so what, if you put the music on to it yourself you should be able to recognise it as you scan through, if you can't then you have problems my friend. The albums are in alphabetical order, if as I have done you use windows media player and set it up to create a file hirachy on the player.

The last good thing about this player is the price, you will not get this quality for this price from any other company and I would recommend anyone thinking of purchasing an mp3 player to get one of these.
