3 out of 5 stars Solid and reliable but the ``resume'' problem will drive you mad.   December 31, 2008
AS BUNTING (UK)
I bought this as an gap-filler purchase after my iRiver died and despite my hasty selection I am quite pleased.

On the positive side, the player implements USB Mass Storage and so mounts as a removable disk in any OS. I have used it with Linux and OpenBSD. The sound is also quite acceptable though there is no option to modify the output. The FM radio is excellent when there is a decent signal though often this requires stretching-out the headphone cable to its maximum extent. The player is also small, 4 cm in length and breadth and 1.1 cm deep, which means than it is perfect for use when out running. The cell charge is quick and lasts for at least eight hours, though it is important to perform a five-hour deep charge prior to first use.

The included headphones are indeed worthless but there are three other niggles which spoil my enjoyment of this player ( firmware 3.00 ):

- The unit will power-off when paused for two minutes, which is understandable, but will only resume from the pause point when it is turned-on again within a few minutes. Otherwise the track resumes from the start. This is illogical and infuriating particularly when listening to a long podcast.

- The player incorporates controls around its perimeter which are well-placed when one wishes to use them but on other occasions can be inadvertently actuated. For example, it is difficult to engage the LOCK slider with one hand without impinging on another control.

- The fast-forward function has two speeds; slow and slower. Probably acceptable for short music tracks but inadequate for long podcasts, especially when the player loses the resume point.

As hardware the unit is very well built with a good solid feel and tight tolerances and it is much more reliable than my previous iRiver T60. As a result I can ( just about ) live with its quirky behaviour.

4 out of 5 stars Great for 'First time' user   December 30, 2008

New to the concept of MP3 players I received this little gadget as a Xmas present and I am delighted. Easy to use and download from Amazon.co.uk went without a hitch.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent player, no question.   December 19, 2008

I recently bought this little player and was extremely impressed almost straight away. After using dynamite to extract the player and other equipment from the extremely well made packaging i was surprised by how light it was. I previously used the zen stone and it was very similar.
Installation and quick use was done in seconds and i was loading albums onto as soon as the charge complete.

The sound quality was good but i adjusted the presets (i found the hip hop setting to be the best non-custom balance) and there was way more bass than i expected. Ditch the headphones and buy another set, the difference is immense if you even spend 20 on another set (i have yet to find an mp3 player with good standard headphones).

The neckstrap is okay but i use this for work so it gets in the way if you aren't sitting down all day. The extra long USB cable is also handy but best of all is the battery life. So far i have played it constantly at work with pretty heavy music for nine solid hours and it barely goes down to half bars.

A couple of very minor niggles get in the way but nothing to put you off buying this player. I highly reccomend it.

4 out of 5 stars Why can't engineering firms write software?   December 1, 2008

I bought this item early November.

It's got great volume and sound (at least when used with Sennheiser CX 400 - High Quality Noise Isolating Ear-Canal-Headphones - Silver).

You can synchronise it with WMP or drag and drop with Explorer (no need to use the likes of Sony's appallingly bad software).

I would have given this item 5 stars if it weren't for one bad point: whichever version of the Philips Device Manager I use, I cannot get it to update the player's firmware. I emailed Philips, from their support site, on 8 Nov and they promised a reply 'within 4 working days'. I'm still waiting.

Having said that, the player works fine and I'd still recommend it if you want a small, light, no-frills shuffle-like device.

3 out of 5 stars Don't drop it!   November 24, 2008
Liza1044 (Hemel Hempstead, England)
I bought this MP3 player for my husband. On the whole he liked it but it did take him a little while to work out how to use and he couldn't get it to read Vista MWA files (MP3 were fine).

However, he did find it a bit fiddly because it was so small and that's what led to its demise after just 4 weeks. He lost grip of the small, smooth little thing and it fell to the floor. It did not bounce! We now have a perfectly formed but dead MP3 player.

So if you are a bit of a butter fingers or have grip problems, think twice before buying this one. Otherwise this is a cracking little device that can slip into the smallest of pockets and works a treat.
