5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   November 4, 2008

I bought one of these and all I can say is it's brilliant! I had no problems getting my computer to recognise it (XP) I've put a few albums on it and have over half of the memory left. I also put a couple of videos on it, obviously they're not great quality, but good enough for an mp3 player. All in all I think it's great value for money and a definate must have!

4 out of 5 stars My SA3245 experience   August 4, 2008

I bought the Philips GoGear SA3245 4Gb MP3/MP4 Video Player about a month ago and like one of your reviewers, had problems getting the computer to recognise it. In the end I completely reset the device as described in the manual and this did sort of work, but the original problems were still intermittent so I sent the device back (Amazon where great and I had a replacement player within a few days).
The replacement player worked faultlessly, but I was a bit disappointed by the jerky scrolling text when playing audio files and I could not get any SMV video file to play properly (both audio and video playback were 'jerky' or broken as if I had the wrong encoding settings). I played around with various AVI/WMV settings, but in the end concluded that there was something wrong with the player. I was about to give up and in desperation went to the Philips web pages for the player (you always assume that it is something you're doing wrong!). Here I found updates to almost all of the software that had been supplied on the CD that accompanied the player. After downloading the new device firmware, it took a lot less time to start, the text on the audio stopped juddering and the graphics on the video playback also changed and the video & audio stopped jerking and breaking up. I also downloaded the updated version of ArcSoft media converter which provided a much better interface.
So, after the initial disappointment, setbacks and lots of hair pulling, once I had the right firmware in the device and software on my computer everything worked perfectly.
As far as audio and video quality is concerned, I've not owned any sort of MP3/4 player before so had no preconceptions, but I've been pleased with the results so far. I've now SMV'ed a few films and series to see how they perform and although the resolution is not that great, it is watchable (what do you expect from 1.8"?).
So, if you are having any problems, check out the Philips web pages for the device and make sure that you have the latest versions of the software. Other than that, you can't really go wrong.
Oh, just a couple of points... It does take a long time to convert from AVI to SMV and although WMP is ok, it did not recognise quite a few of my CD's and I've spent longer than I wanted to typing in the play lists by hand.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite so bad as you may think!   July 13, 2008

I am 63 with no sense of how to work the new Philips MP3/MP4 player and would agree with your previous reviewer ... that is until I did a bit of investigation so that I could try and download my music library in iTunes. I cannot and you cannot! This is somewhat disappointing as I had built up quite a good library. You can only add iTune libraries to MP3 players and not MP4 players. Be warned before you buy! BUT and it is a big but if you download the latest version of Media Player from Microsoft (free) and when downloaded open it up. Note the Media Player screen must be visible. Then, simply, connect your MP4 player to your computer and Hey Presto up comes a small screen on the right hand side inviting you to drag your chosen selections (assuming you already have some in your media player libarary (if not just download some CDs in the usual way). When dragged across you will see them all listed. Then press Start Sync and over they go to your MP4 player. Simple when you know how. I am giving this prodcut 3 stars as once understood the sound quality is brilliant and the FM radio even better! Hope that helps. One final thing ... if Media Player spots any tunes you bought from elsewhere they will not allow you to download them!

I've used my Philips GoGear SA3245 on a daily basis since I got it a couple of months ago. It's a lovely piece of kit and I've had no problems with it at all. It plays MP3s and videos effortlessly and the radio is a real boon. The screen is small, but I'm able to view family pictures easily and it has great storage capacity. I regularly download radio podcasts and listen again on my way to work. It's handy to be able to use it as a sound recorder too.
Battery life is excellent.
It's great for the price and I wouldn't be without it!

1 out of 5 stars Worthless and misleading   June 25, 2008

Do noy buy this product under any circumstances. I got it on the 25th of June and within the same day it stopped working. The screen just went black and now it refuses to work. The software provided with the "mp3" player discovers an error but fails to fix it. Since I am in the north of the UK their are no service centres nearby according to the philips site. Also the description is misleading as it does not play MP4 but you have to convert to another format that philips has. Don't buy it.
