Excellent! December 29, 2008 The Questionable Shredder (UK) Still getting to grips with this but so far very pleased. Excellent resolution, easy to use (if you have a Canon camera then menu is nearly identical) and SD cards so much better than tape or hard drives. Worth noting that it is possible to burn videos onto a standard DVD-R that then plays back in full HD when run through some of the newer Blu-Ray player because the AVCHD coding is intact. However (i) not all dedicated Blu-Ray players will do so and (ii) the more recent models have SD card reader built in as well.
Just Right! December 16, 2008 M. Fullerton (Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After a lot of deliberating i decided to go for the hf100 over the Sony TG3. I am quite happy with my decision. It is small and light enough to fit in the average jacket pocket quite comfortably. The video quality on my 32 Inch Sony HD ready tv is stunning. I have used the various quality settings, the highest of which is FXP. FXP is the only setting that records in full HD 1920x1080. The other settings record at a lower resolution but the difference is not noticable on my tv as it is not full HD. I record using FXP onto 8gb sdhc cards. The reason I use 8gb cards is they will hold one hour of filming at the FXP setting, which was good enough for me in the past with tape. I can also cut and paste the folders from the card onto a dual layer dvd for archiving. I also save the files on my hard drive which i can then copy back to a SD card if i want to watch them in HD through the camera again. I use a 20 inch imac 2.4ghz with 4gb ram. It edits no problem with Imovie 08. Very Happy.
Absolutely astounded October 21, 2008 Dr. R. James (Norwich, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had read the reviews, and decided that I needed a new camcorder as my 3CCD Sony is in storage, as is my old canon, and a spare Samsung. I have to say I was stunned by its compact size. But can it perform like a proper, big fat heavy camcorder? Oh my word it can! I have just seen the pictures on a standard 22" TV through a non-HD cable. It's fantastic. I just cannot imagine how good it will look on a proper HD television. I am just amazed as to how something this small can outperform everything before it. I am also amazed at the quality of the still frames. These are definitely acceptable for snapshots, or web based images. I am just delighted with the camcorder. I only have one small problem - I think that you need enormous computer power if you choose to edit the footage - I have a 1.8 Ghz CPU with 3 Gb RAM, but this doesn't seem anywhere near powerful enough.
Caution (for film editing) September 23, 2008 Ostara (London, England) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this for a film-making project (I work with teenagers). I read plenty of reviews and this seemed top of the line technology. It's a great camera, looks and feels good. However I have encountered a very big obstacle - I can't download any footage to my PC or laptops! The software the comes with this camcorder (Pixela) is buggy and no good for editing film. I have used Windows Movie Maker and Premier Elements before and got on fine with them. But as this camcorder stores files as AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) they are completely different to Mpegs or Mpeg2's. There is no software currently on the market to run and edit AVCHD into movies. Pinnacle claims to, but as a review of that product says - no, it doesn't! All the shining reviews of this product are of people who burn the files directly to disc or use simple TV playback. So if you want a camera to shoot movies and edit them - wait for the software first!
Canon HF 100 High Def Camcorder September 20, 2008 Mr. A. Jones (Durham UK.) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Canon HF 100 Camcorder. Overview...... I have just bought this camcorder and find it excellent - good high definition video and 3 Meg Pix still camera. - Well built, good features - Highly Recommended. Pros .......... * Good Price, SDHC cards only (I bought a 16 Gig card SDHC Class 6 - loads cheaper than Sony flash memory), * No recording moving parts (hard drive / tapes (less to go wrong)), * Small size but fits palm of hand comfortably. * Easy set up button works well, 37mm std lens screw to fit filters / lenses etc., * Still flash and video LED for low lighting. Cons .......... * Steady shot could be a bit better, low light is just about OK except for quite dark subjects - use built in LED and Flash - but this is not an expensive camera, * Sound requires some care setting up. * Manual settings require some menu navigation but is generally OK. * AVCHD files take time to convert - same for all HD cameras. - not like old firewire / tape videos. Advice ......... * Buy a proper wide angle lens 0.5 to get more into a scene - not a 0.45 lens which requires panning back to remove black outer ring making it pointless over the original lens. * Third party batteries are cheap ( 25 for two 1400mah + home & car charger. They work fine but have no timed display on camera (just make sure they are fully charged). * Mac users (even G5 machines) can connect via USB2, convert files using Toast Titanium (don't use 16:9 resolution - results in jumpy footage for fast movie scenes), to any required resolution (DVD quality or High Definition if your ready for blue ray and have the hard ware). Edit using imovie (I used v 6) and iDVD to add the titles. * The camera is compact so a 0.5 wide angle lens casts a shadow from the flash and inbuilt video light onto the subject - so for the small time you need extra lighting either provide by some other means or don't use the lens. * Consider a shotgun microphone for distant subject in noisy environment.
